For those of you who know and love Annemarie Souza, you know that she is a fighter and has an amazingly strong will to live. She has been a teacher, coach, mentor and friend to many kids in her community.
Annemarie has been living with a chronic autoimmune disease since she was in college called Lupus. Lupus causes your immune system to attack healthy organs and tissues damaging them and ultimately causes organ failure. She has lived in extreme pain almost her whole life.
Annemarie has spent the last few years on dialysis since her kidneys no longer work. She has been on the organ transplant list awaiting a kidney donor for the past few years as well. Unfortunately she has had a bunch of set-backs including several strokes and a life threatening condition called Calciphylaxis. It causes necrotic tissue and leaves large open sores and ulcerations that often get infected. Only 20-30% of people survive this condition.
In August, 2016 Annemarie was admitted to Mass General Hospital with large open calciphylaxis wounds across her abdomen. She had multiple surgeries and spent 6 months living at the hospital. After a miraculous recovery that truly beat the odds Annemarie is back at her home continuing therapy and treatments there. The road ahead is still long and hard and carries many challenges and risks.
Annemarie has been unable to work for the last several years due to the treatments and her mom, Dolly, lost her job just before Annemarie was admitted to the hospital. She drove up to Boston almost every other day to be with her daughter and slept on a cot many nights in her hospital room.
Annemarie and her mom are struggling to pay the bills with both of them unable to work. More than anything right now they could use prayers and some financial help to ease the burden while Annemarie focuses on recovery. Please consider giving anything you can. Even small amounts will go to help cover the cost of gas to get to her doctor's appointments or groceries for the house.
