Help 220 STEM Students through this Crisis

Tax deductible
“What On-Ramps has done for me, my community and family is too important for us to stop now.”
              -  D’Mario A., On-Ramps Alumni

Like many in our community, some of On-Ramps’ major partners also have been forced to put their operations and funding programs on hold, creating an immediate need for us to raise $22,000 in April to be able to continue our work preparing and placing underrepresented Washington DC’s STEM students in employment.

The On-Ramps team is responding to the unprecedented COVID19 crisis by working with our public and private partners to ensure that Washington DC students can still prepare for careers and help provide for their families this year, undaunted by the current crisis. But we need your help.

Every contribution of any amount will help. And every $100 donated will help us put one of this year’s students through internship training this spring.  Every $1,500 will support a student in our STEM intern program for the year.

D’Mario urged us to start this GoFundMe campaign and volunteered to set it up. We hope you can join. To read more about how we’ll keep working with your support, see below.

Thank you for considering this call to action for Washington DC young people.

Sincerely,

D’Mario A. & the On-Ramps to Careers Staff and Board:
Antwanye Ford, Enlightened, Inc.
Steve Seiden, Acquired Data Solutions
Monique LeNoir, United Negro College Fund
James Vollman, Advanced Workforce Systems
Neenia Barlatt-Higgins, Accenture
Valerie Jiggets, Community Social Justice
Rudolph Nickens, Department of Transportation

Now more than ever, low-income students and their families are counting on US to provide them with the future-affirming experience of meaningful employment. Students like D’Mario and 500 other On-Ramps alumni help provide for their families with paid work each summer. And their experiences with our 25+ employers help them stand out for college applications, scholarships and crucial networks to pursue technology and engineering careers.

To that end, On-Ramps and our partners like Accenture, Acquired Data Solutions, Enlightened, OCTO and 12 public high schools serving underserved students are helping to advance this work with us. This campaign will help us continue our programs. In addition to the normal operations your donation will sustain, we are going to modify our programs this spring to respond to the COVID crisis through:

1 - Virtual Preparation of Students. Adapt our Intern Success Workshops this spring to provide online courses, video interviewing, resume preparation and elevator speech webinars for all of our intern candidates. Accenture, which has always provided dozens of On-Ramps volunteers will now also assist in making these trainings virtual for all intern candidates during March, April and June this year.

2 - Virtual Support of Employers. Help host employers and DC public schools, and staff plan to still provide internships whether we return to normal operations or we continue virtual operations into the internship calendar. We’ll help prepare supervisors for virtual interviewing, supervision and project work for students.

3 - Virtual Interviewing. Support and schedule virtual interviews for low income students with our employers in place of our previous in-person interview days with DCPS, OSSE, and individual employers.

4 - Virtual Internship Projects. Offer virtual internship experiences for the 220 MBSYEP participants who have applied to On-Ramps. Even if the worksite limits continue, we will support our employers to offer virtual supervision, mentoring, workshops and virtual projects to engage students.

5 - Virtual Tech Learning. Arrange supplemental distance learning with partners like Accenture, OCTO and UDC to compliment employers’ engagement of participants and give students new skills that will prepare them to be adaptive and resilient no matter what the future brings.

Given our technology industry focus, we are well positioned to make this virtual work possible to overcome COVID-19 adversity. We are also optimistic about the resources to innovate in our community of supporters like you.
