Help Stroke Victim Receive the Care He Needs
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Shelby Darling and I never thought I would have to do this but my father, Kevin Howard (AKA Bryan), suffered a major stroke this past January (1/13/2023). We did not find him till at least 24 hours after the fact. It is a miracle and a blessing that he survived that time period and while most Doctors and Nurse Practitioners told us he would never recover to any semblance of normalcy, he proved them wrong! He started improving slowly but surely. At first it was his right leg, as his right side was left impaired/ flaccid after the incident, he began to move his toes and eventually his leg. He was making progress with walking before his Insurance stopped his coverage. Then it was his communication skills, at first he couldn’t communicate with us at all, and he still can’t verbally but he has been able to motion to us what he wants and occasionally even write what he wants. He has a long way to go but has been making considerable improvements since January.
However, we are currently running into a road block because the Rehab facility he is currently at wants to discharge him on Christmas Eve due to a 10k invoice. I was not aware that this balance was due because I thought any bills would be taken care of when Medicaid went into effect. But he was denied Medicaid due to his Life Insurance Policy and multiple vehicles being on his name with the DMV. After I cancelled the policy and removed the vehicles, I thought that would help but it doesn’t right off the bat, due to the past due balance. The application was resubmitted but it takes time to be reviewed/approved.
Unfortunately, I do not have the means to pay it all up front and I even tried to get a Personal Loan, but I do not qualify for it at this time. This is my last resort because my Family and I do not have the means to take care of my Father and give him the care he needs. I truly wish I did but I do not. My home is not currently set up to be handicapable but I plan to have it done in the near future when I can make the necessary modifications and he is more independent because I ultimately want him to come home.
My father is a great man and helps all those that he loves and cares for. Any donations will be greatly appreciated and whatever is not used will be donated to another family in need.
