Hi, Kimberley here. In May this year I will be travelling to Malawi as a volunteer doctor with PINCC, an American NGO dedicated to to ending cervical cancer deaths in low- and middle-income countries by using affordable, effective technology to build lasting health programs.

In Australia, the estimated risk of dying from cervical cancer is 1.5 per 100000 women.

But Malawi has the highest cervical cancer mortality rate globally, with around 53.9 deaths per 100,000 women.

In Australia, we have a very effective screening program and vaccination against Human papilloma virus, but if you are unlucky enough to be diagnosed with early stage 1 cervical cancer the survival rate is around 92%.

In Malawi, the 5-year survival is only only 2.9%.

This entirely preventable cancer cancer is the most common malignancy in women in Malawi, accounting for over 40% of female cancers.

PINCC aims to change that by training local medical personnel, creating sustainable programs, and empowering communities through education. PINCC's mission is to make cervical dysplasia treatment accessible worldwide, preventing cervical cancer and saving lives.
