Stop the East Reading flyover
The East Reading MRT (‘Mass Rapid Transport’) is a road for buses with a flyover over the River Kennet.
Broken Brow, the Thames Path and the Coal Woodland constitute a green lung bordering the River Thames. It is edged by mature woodland and provides a rich habitat for birds and animals, including bats, insects, birds, reptiles and small mammals.
This stretch of the Thames riverside is well used and enjoyed by nature lovers, joggers, cyclists, families, dog walkers alike. It is currently under threat.
What is the threat?
Wokingham and Reading Borough Council want to build a concrete flyover alongside the Thames and bridging over the Kennet mouth, through Coal Woodland. The road would be a bus, cycle and pedestrian route fed by a new Park and Ride at Broken Brow (behind the Wokingham Waterside Centre, off the Thames Valley Park roundabout). The scheme contravenes many local and national planning policies designed to protect precious green space.
Our hope is to get the Planning Application rejected. We will then work with the community to enhance the Thames Path and Coal Woodland and ensure this wonderful green open space remains an asset for everyone.
RBC have already spent over £538,000 on the application alone and the total cost for the MRT and Park and Ride is estimated at £31.5 million, £4.9 million coming from Reading and £900k from Wokingham (Community Infrastructure Levy). Money that SOAR understand could have been spent on other less costly alternatives.
Why We Need Funds?
We know that there are thousands of people on Social Media who support SOAR's campaign. We now need to reach the tens of thousands in the area who are still unaware of the MRT. Please give what you can to fund an advertising campaign to reach those who would be concerned as you are, if only they knew.
