Give the Gift of Education

Dear Friends,

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. "

I am at it again raising money to provide some sort of equality in the world and a chance for a young girl to complete her education and move out of the poverty she was born into.

This one is dear to my heart because it is the daughter of my wonderful partner, Eduardo.

This one is very personal as it is about supporting a young adult who grew up in poverty to gain access to the free education she rightfully earned.  And this young girl is the daughter of my boyfriend.

This story might be a little lengthy and I apologize in advance that I sometimes write too much but I have much I want to share with you in hopes that it will inspire you to make a contribution.

My boyfriend, Eduardo, grew up in poverty.  His father couldn't read or write until he was 30 years of age and the only job he could get was being a janitor.   There is nothing wrong with this job but especially here in Brazil, it doesn't pay a lot. Most often it doesn't even pay minimum wage and the hours of grueling.  When you have a wife and 3 boys at home to feed that can be difficult.  There were many times they went without food.  And Eduardo remembers the feeling of having nothing to eat for days when he was young.

That feeling of being hungry and wanting a better life for him and his family is what has driven him to work hard for his own education and why he encourages his children to do the same.  One of the many things I admire about him is his hunger for knowledge.   We are equals in our passion to constantly be learning and growing.

One of his daughters recently was accepted into university, which is not an easy task here in Brazil, and especially for those who have less resources and limited access to a decent education.  The odds are not stacked in their favor.

The public university system is the better education offered in Brazil and it is free but you need to score high on the exam in order to be accepted. Student often take time after high school to study for these exams, as they are very difficult.  Eduardo’s daughter, Stephany, studied for two years after finishing high school and was awarded one out of 200 spots available in the law program at the Federal University here in Rio de Janeiro.  There were over 1000 people who took the exam for this specific program.

We are so exited for her to pursue her dreams in law.

As many of us know the cost of university is burdensome and Stephany is lucky that she will receive a free education. But with that being said she still to financially over the cost of transportation, books and supplies.  This burden lays heavily on Eduardo since he is the breadwinner for his family.

Brazil’s economy tanked about 4 years ago now and 2 years ago the company that Eduardo works for cut his salary by 60%.  This is no joke! That was devastating for him but manageable because he could reduce some major expenses by moving back in with his mother. Not something that many of us would want to do but when necessary we do it to make it through the challenging times.

Eduardo recently found out that they are going to cut his salary even more starting November 1stand they are cutting the health insurance coverage for his children.

Eduardo is one of the best father’s in the world….he is one of the good ones and he has worked so hard to change his situation.  I know he is going to get there.

Well, his birthday is coming up on October 28thand I thought the best gift I could give him is to help him find a way to solve this issue and help his daughter pursue her dream of getting an education.

She needs roughly $3000USD for the year, which would cover her transportation, books, supplies and a laptop.

I have already committed $50 a month towards this and would like to ask you to join me by making a contribution to this.

$25 covers a week of transportation
$100 covers a month of transportation
Books vary from $5 to roughly $150 depending on the books
Laptop is roughly $350

Any amount you would like to contribute would be greatly appreciated and I promise to send updates, photos and more little goodies to anyone who supports the cause.

Much Love & Light,
Kerri-Ann
