Hi Everyone! Our wonderful Gregory neighborhood crossing guard, Stacy, needs our help. If you don’t know Stacy, she is one of the kindest, humblest people you’ll ever meet. She always has a smile, and is mindful when she needs to protect our kids. Raised in West Orange, she has cared for and lived in her grandmother’s home for the past 30 years. The home was built back in the 1950’s by her family, and it’s four generations deep. This is her story. When Covid hit in 2020, Stacy became unemployed from her two jobs as a crossing guard and staff member at a country club. Her grandmother, in her mid 90s, had sadly started to develop dementia. Stacy noticed the utility bill balances had climbed to the thousands, resulting in shut off notices. After digging a bit more, she discovered that her grandmother’s identity had been stolen and that her social security checks had been taken for the past several years. Not only were the utility bills not being paid, but the taxes had also not been paid on the home for several years, resulting in a $52,000 tax debt. Side note, her grandmother had a reverse mortgage on the home as well from ten years previous to Covid. At this time, Stacy was able to secure power of attorney and started paying down the utility bills, but the back taxes of $52,000 has not yet been addressed. Stacy consulted with an attorney who advised her to declare bankruptcy so that she could keep the house, with the agreement of paying down the $52,000 debt she owes in three years. She has been working 3 jobs for the past several months to try to pay down the monthly debt of $2500 for back taxes. This amount is in addition to her current taxes and regular expenses. She isn't sleeping more than a few hours each morning, because one of her jobs is at a convenience store and she does the night shift. The challenge is that the bank now owns the house, and the only way to potentially claim ownership is to pay off the taxes as quickly as possible. Stacy has two children, ages 14 and 19, who also work to pay for their own expenses when they can.
