Help Special Needs Athletes Get Their Own Gym

Fiscaal aftrekbaar
“We had more than one doctor tell us he may not walk… look at him balancing on that balance beam! Before we found River City Inclusive Gymnastics our son didn’t even have the confidence to step foot on a playground. Now, he can do the monkey bars! RCIG is more than just gymnastics, it’s a community.  From the volunteer relationships to the shared stories among waiting parents in the lobby.  The hour a week we spend here serves much more than just our son and his mental and physical well-being. It’s the kind of good work that betters everyone involved. I don’t know what Richmond would do without it.”  - Caitlin Findlay (parent of a 5th grader with a rare chromosomal duplication)

For many special needs individuals extra-curricular activities simply do not exist outside a traditional therapy setting.  And while therapeutic interventions are both necessary and effective they’re often missing one crucial ingredient - fun. At River City Inclusive Gymnastics, besides delivering fun, our goal is to provide a safe and positive environment where children, teens AND adults with special needs can improve motor skills, social skills and self-esteem through group gymnastics and fitness training all while feeling part of their own team.

Currently our 90+ athletes train in a rented space we share with a traditional gymnastics program. And while initially the shared space meant we could simply exist, our goal is to expand our reach to more aptly serve the special needs community where we live (currently there are over 10,000 school age individuals and even more adults in the greater Richmond area with a disability).

We want to be able to expand our reach and offer every special needs’ individual a safe space free of auditory and visual distractions to reach their potential. Right now, our classes are held concurrently with over 50 traditional gymnastics students working at the same time and often in close proximity. Bottom line: WE NEED OUR OWN GYM!

All donations made on this page are 100% tax deductible and will go specifically toward construction of our own, sensory-friendly, therapeutic gym space.

For many of our current families the service we provide is the only opportunity their special needs family member has to socialize with peers, work towards a fitness goal, and have their own team. We never turn anyone away, and our unofficial motto is “Any Participation is Full Participation”. We serve individuals with a range of diagnoses; from Autism Spectrum Disorder to Traumatic Brain Injury to Cerebral Palsy as well as non-diagnosed genetic disorders and other individuals considered neurotypical. Please help us better help them!

On behalf of our current athletes, their families, volunteers, coaches, and Board of Directors -  thank you for your consideration!
