The SAFE (Securing Africa's Future with Education) Academy for teenage leaders is an educational empowerment scheme. This project aims to teach critical life and professional skills neglected in the Nigerian education system’s day-to-day curriculum to school-aged children and teenagers. The program includes mentorship and non-formal education designed to develop essential leadership, entrepreneurship and technological skills for the 21st century. We focus on children whose social backgrounds hinder their access to educational and other critical opportunities. Since its inception in 2014, the project has benefited over 6000 teenagers, providing them with the proper orientation needed to be productive and become active global citizens who can face life’s inevitable challenges and stand a chance for a better future.
Over a period of three months, the academy provides teens with professional skills training using a curriculum that includes self-awareness, social etiquette, emotional intelligence, leadership, design thinking, entrepreneurship and business writing. The academy also provides digital literacy skills training, including Microsoft Office, graphics design, digital marketing and web design. Our goal in 2021 is to empower hundred (100) girls with leadership, entrepreneurship and digital literacy skills.
In a batch of twenty-five girls per quarter, hundred girls will go through the SAFE Academy over the next year. The girls will learn self-awareness, social etiquette, emotional intelligence, leadership, design thinking, entrepreneurship and business writing, Microsoft Office, graphics design, digital marketing and web design. It will cost $100 to train a girl for three months. Your donation will help to pay for equipment, facilitator's stipend and refreshments for the students.

Why girls and digital literacy?

We conducted a preliminary survey in fifteen secondary schools (ten public schools and five private schools) in Ibadan, Nigeria. Our finding shows that only 7% of the schools are equipped for digital learning. Also, 20% of the schools include entrepreneurship in their curriculum, and less than 15% teach leadership in their school. During the survey, we met a female student named Shade. Shade is a fourteen years old student in senior secondary school 1. She is the fifth child of eight children in her family and has six sisters. She is an exceptionally brilliant girl and wants to be an engineer when she grows up. When our researcher asked her what specialty, she said computer engineering. Shade has never used a computer before. But she became fascinated with computer engineering when a young teacher brought a laptop into her class—stories such as shade’s story birth the need for leadership and entrepreneurship training that incorporates digital literacy.
Furthermore, our decision to focus on young girls stems from the inequality against girls in Nigeria. For example, in the northern part of Nigeria, where they still practise child marriage, only 17% of primary and secondary school students are female (Adeyemi 2004). Such disheartening statistics inspire more focus on female education. The Girls digital literacy program aims to provide the essential technical skills to girls from low-income backgrounds and instill them with skills to become global citizens.
