Help South Philly Family displaced by Fire

Donation protected

I'm a Philadelphia public school teacher. These little sweethearts, who are my former students, have just witnessed a tragedy and experienced a trauma. A little over a week ago, in the middle of the night, the youngest boy awoke to loud noises. He smelled smoke, realized there was a fire (which originated in the row home next door), and immediately woke up his mother, three elderly relatives, and three siblings, saving their lives. This 3rd grader is a hero.

When the firefighters arrived, my student wanted to run back into the burning home with them to help bring out his elderly relatives, and wouldn't leave the scene till he saw everyone was safe. During this, he and his family witnessed two young children next door--their good friends--perish in the fire.

The family did not own the home they were living in, and have no insurance or other means of emergency support. Their belongings have been destroyed, and they have nowhere to go. The four children are each attending school, and their mother is an essential worker who works full time as a home health aid, caring for the vulnerable throughout the pandemic. She is a hero too.

We have been able through donations to keep the family together and safe in a hotel, but the funds will soon run out. Our goal is to help them move into an affordable home.

The mother wants to pay her own rent and bills, but she needs assistance to cover move-in costs (security deposit etc), as well as help finding a home to rent. We are searching for a possible home for them as we speak, but we need help keeping them safe in a hotel, as well as funds to help offset the moving costs.  I'm going to raise the amount we need, and hope and pray that people can help come together to help the family.

Their only other option is to enter a homeless shelter, a terrifying prospect in the middle of winter, during a life-threatening pandemic, and a move that would imperil the four children’s schooling and fragile sense of stability after living through an unspeakable tragedy. Please consider helping and sharing, to give this mom and her kids a chance.
