Help soprano Miku get Guildhall's Artist Diploma

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Miku Yasukawa, and I am soprano singer based in the UK and Japan.

On this opportunity, I would like to ask your support for my studies in the Artist Diploma course at Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

I would be very happy if you could read this whole post for me.

First of all, the Artist Diploma course at Guildhall School is one of the most prestigious courses in the UK. In this course we can learn through individual classes, get great opportunities to appear in concerts at the university, in addition to having special lessons with professors, so it would be incredibly helpful to my career as a soprano.

【Details of my situation】

I started singing when I was 16 years old.

I finished my master’s degree in Music in 2018 getting scholarship from the university as an award and have since appeared in many concerts in Japan as a soprano soloist in the category of religious music, singing pieces by composers such as Bach, Händel, Mozart, Vivaldi and others.

At the same time, I appeared in some concerts in Vienna, Taiwan and performed with some members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

I started living in the UK since May of 2019 to study and make my career there.

It was not easy to improve my singing skills through private lessons, masterclasses and competitions, while at the same studying English very hard. But thanks to my lovely teachers and friends, I really came to love the UK and made the firm decision of becoming a great singer there. Then I gradually got some opportunities to sing as a soloist in the UK in the same category of music as in Japan.

However, I am not in a good situation financially and I do not have enough money to study at a music school. Wanting to continue my studies here in the UK and to have the precious opportunity of making new connections, I tried some auditions for full-scholarship courses. I need a lot of money to even live there, so saving enough money to study at a university is out of the picture for me. As I participated in these auditions, I was also suggested to apply for the Artist’s Diploma course at Guildhall, which I decided to do despite the fact that it was not a full-scholarship program. Yet I was able to pass the audition and obtain an 80% scholarship, as I insisted that I could not pay the full tuition.

As I mentioned before, this program is one of the most prestigious courses in the UK. From the program's website  :

"The Artist Diploma represents post-Masters progression, and is designed to meet the specialised needs and aspirations of outstanding performance students, and to support them with the competence and sensitivity required."

I did not expect that I could study in the Artist Diploma course, but I decided to go ahead with it, somehow saving for the 20% of the full tuition that I had to pay. And I was very much looking forward to study there.

However, under the Covid situation, I reluctantly decided to defer my entrance from September 2020 to September 2021. Basically, the Artist Diploma’s curriculum is very difficult to learn online. I thought I would be able to take the advantage of such a great opportunity most effectively by starting at a more adequate time. I was also having problems with my English, and I could put all my energies to improve my language skills during this period. But, as a result of my deferral, I lost the privilege of my scholarship.

Since I found that I lost my scholarship, I have tried all available opportunities for scholarships and grants, but the effects of the pandemic have been really felt. For example, some of these opportunities have been canceled, while others I could not join because of quarantine. I am still waiting for the results of a couple of scholarships, but I am yet to get a good result from them in this difficult time.

While studying at Guildhall, I will need to cover these expenses for two years:

·        For the tuition: £15,200 a year

·        For the rent: £650 per month

·        For living expenses: £2,000 a year

·        For paying for pianist: £100 each time

Additionally, as I am an international student, I have some additional fees. For example,

·        For the flight: around £800 between Tokyo and London once

·        For the cost of my home: Now I am temporarily in Japan to join an audition for a scholarship and to sing at concerts. I am staying in a short-term rental room in Tokyo. Short term rentals are more expensive than a normal apartment. (When we stay in Japan for a short period of time, unless we are in our parents’ house, we need to choose between a hotel or short-term rental). As my parent’s house is in the countryside, it is far from Tokyo. Since we are prohibited to move from Tokyo to other prefectures under the Covid restrictions, I currently have to pay for my accommodation in Tokyo in addition to London. I will be in Tokyo for 3 months.

I will need to pay for a year of tuition (of which I have saved£3,200) by mid August.

I am currently earning money from singing at concerts (of course, the number of concerts is incredibly low nowadays), teaching singing lessons, teaching Japanese lessons and some part time jobs, but it is not enough to save the amount I need for tuition. That is why I come here to ask for your support today.

Thank you for reading my story! I would really appreciate it if you could contribute even a small amount. Every little bit helps!

Lastly, I would be also very happy if you could share this page with your friends.
