Help SoMom to Fight Cancer
Hi everybody, my name is Eric So, I live in Utah and am from Hong Kong. My mom, as my friends call her: “SoMom”, was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer in early 2018 and it has already spread to her liver. My sister (Michelle So) and I love SoMom so much and we are heartbroken.
Growing up, she was a supportive mother and she was a provider. She’d been working very hard her whole life and was planning to retire next year. Since SoMom found out about the cancer, she’s been very strong and optimistic. Especially with her grandchildren coming into the world soon (my wife is 7-month pregnant and my sister is 8-month pregnant), she is trying to stay positive and act happy so that she can see the grandson and the granddaughter.
Being a working-class family in Hong Kong, she doesn’t have health insurance. We are currently paying everything out of pocket because health care in Hong Kong isn’t a very good system. The doctor suggests targeted therapy and chemo, since surgery is out of the question at this point. However, SoMom has been waiting for a long time for the public hospital just to get testing and treatment. He recommended we transfer her to a different hospital (Queen Elizabeth Hospital or Hong Kong Baptist Hospital) so that we don’t have to keep waiting to start the treatment. Transferring her to another hospital and the medical expenses are very expensive (approximately USD$80,000 a year). We are doing everything we can to cover the cost, but our efforts alone aren’t enough. Please help support this urgent mission!
