Kaçak Çay Performansı, Türkiye'nin karmaşık sosyopolitik manzarasında bir Türk ve bir Kürt sanatçı arasındaki imkansız işbirliğine dair oyunbaz bir performans, bir mise-en-abyme. Fatih Gençkal ve Mustafa Zeren, yaşamlarını saran güç eşitsizlikler, belirsizlikler ve ekonomik mücadelelerin gölgesinde bir dans performansı hazırlamak gibi olağanüstü bir yolculuğa çıkıyorlar.
Ocak 2020’den bu yana devam eden süreç, geçtiğimiz Eylül ayında Amsterdam, Berlin ve İstanbul’daki performanslarla görünürlüğünü artırdı. Bununla birlikte sürecin günlüğü mahiyetindeki Smuggled Tea Diaries adlı instagram hesabı üzerinden Kaçak Çay Performansı’nın yolculuğunu da paylaşıyoruz. Sürecin sıradaki adımında ise, bu iş ile Türkiye’de sanatçı olmak, coğrafyalar-arası işbirliği yapmak ve performans üzerinden anlam üretmek gibi konularda açtığımız tartışma alanını Türkiye’nin farklı yerlerine yaymak ve bunu belgelemek istiyoruz.
Yine sizin desteğinizle Türkiye’nin tüm bölgelerindeki 9 şehre yayılan bir turne yapmak istiyoruz. Bu turneyi farklı şehirlerde kültür-sanat alanında faaliyet gösteren ortaklarımızla birlikte organize edip performans sonrası söyleşilerle paylaşım alanlarını ve karşılaşmaları artırmak ve bu süreci, akademik katkılarla bir kitap formunda belgelemek istiyoruz. Bugün Türkiye’de üretmenin anlamına ve olanaklarına dair tartışmaları ilk elden deneyimler üzerinden belgelemek, Kaçak Çay sürecinin önemli bir çıktısı olacak.

Support the experiment of Smuggled Tea Performance!
Hi, my name is Fatih. I am a performing artist based in İzmir, Turkey and I started this fundraiser in August 2023 to cover the expenses of the travels that we undertook with our latest performance work (a collaboration with Mustafa from Diyarbakır) Smuggled Tea Performance for our first European tour. This trip has been a very important opportunity for us to make our voices heard in the European scene about very pressing issues of performance-making in the Turkish context, thanks to the support of our doners here.
Smuggled Tea Performance is a playful performance (a mise-en–abîme) of the impossible collaboration between a Turkish (me) and a Kurdish artist (Mustafa) within the complex sociopolitical landscape of Turkey.
In January 2020, Mustafa and I embarked on an extraordinary journey of making a dance performance together despite the power inequalities and economic struggles that permeate our lives. After 3,5 years of adventure to make this performance between Diyarbakır and İzmir against all odds -a pandemic, devastating natural disasters, economic crises and political turmoil, Smuggled Tea Performance keeps writing its own story as a self-produced, self-reflective and process based performance piece.
We had our world premiere at Amsterdam Fringe Festival on September 7. We then went to Berlin to perform once more and finalized our tour in İstanbul Fringe Festival on September 23rd.
The piece is a reflection on the possibility of making a collaborative work in the Turkish context today so it longs to be seen in different contexts within Turkey and abroad. The very making of it is deliberately self-produced and community-supported.
Now, we imagine a tour of Turkey in the next season including a total of 9 cities and hope to publish a book of our experiences next year. This will be the best way to come closest to the very core of what we are trying to do with the piece: to widen the discussion on artistic collaboration possibilities in Turkey today. For this we ask your support again.
