On April 9th, 2024, one of our absolute biggest fears as a parent became our reality. It was the day that started a journey that would forever change our lives. Our Son Sirus was taken to ER for coughing up blood and having difficulties breathing. He was rushed to OU Children's Hospital by ambulance from Shawnee. Within a matter of 2 weeks and an astronomical amount of testing, we found his lungs had fluid retention, he was missing two pints blood, kidney's were not functioning properly, nor was his heart. He was then diagnosed with AHUS (atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome), an ultra rare genetic disease that causes tiny blood clots to form in your blood vessels, blocking blood flow to important organs. aHUS can cause kidney failure, heart disease, and other serious health problems. On the 15th Sirus was discharged to go home full of energy and high hopes of getting back to his life when suddenly everything took a tragic turn. On the 18th, we were headed back to OU for a follow up and plasma treatment when 15 minutes from the hospital Sirus suffered sudden heart failure. His father craddled him from the car screaming for help running him into the Emergency department downstairs where he was then rushed in for emergency surgery to place a central venous line and be put on life support. After days of being in a medical induced coma and being placed on dialysis in hopes to heal his heart and kidney's from the trauma and allow the machines to do the work, Sirus then suffered a stroke while coming off life support. Unfortunately, due to such heavy sedation, the stroke was unnoticed for two days until the sedation was being lifted, and his father realized his left side had zero movement or response and was confirmed with a CT scan that he had suffered brain damage. We have started plasma therapy in hopes of trying to treat and calm the AHUS, but nothing is set and stone. The doctors are still trying to find answers, not just for us but in the hope of getting an actual set treatment plan for Sirus. Our family is struggling and we are living in what feels like survival mode. We are not prepared for the challenges that are ahead of us. His father is the sole provider for our family and has not left the hospital one time since the start and we are just trying to keep everything together. We are putting our pride to the side and asking for help. We have 5 children total (14,13,8,7 and 1) three are still finishing the school year so we are constantly driving back and forth and were trying so hard to keep it together physically, mentally and emotionally. We are broken. We are numb. But we are fighters. Please fight with us.
