Help Sirius Walk Again!

Donation protected
On Sunday, June 25th, our amazing working husky Sirius tore his cranial crucial ligament (the equivalent to a human ACL).  He has zero use of the limb and requires surgery to walk again.  Surgery to restore function is scheduled for Thursday, June 29th, and we have had absolutely no hesitation in scheduling it.  Unfortunately, pet insurance does not cover this type of injury and we are scrambling to get the funds ready and it will be a struggle to make ends meet.  Dog daycare is an emotionally rewarding career, but not a financially lucrative one.  That's something we have come to terms with happily as a family, but in emergency situations like this, it gets tough and we have to reach out to friends and family.

Ligament injuries such as this are a genetic predisposition - Sirius was just born with bad cruciate ligaments.  This actually means that he will require a second corrective surgery after he recovers from this one, or risk a 50% chance of tearing his other side within the next 12 months.  He is already showing signs of damage in his X-rays.  But we are taking this one step at a time.

Sirius is not only a beloved family member, but a hard working temperament tester for Dog Days San Diego.  For the past 7 years, Sirius has been meeting first day dogs at our daycare and helping us assess temperaments to make sure all the dogs in our facility are cared for properly and in keeping with the above-industry standards of care at Dog Days.  If your dog began attending with us before 2016 (when he was semi-retired because of his arthritis), they were introduced to Sirius first.  Not only that, but he takes amazing initiative in the training and behavior in all our clients.  Many of our long-time customers have benefited from his incredibly sensitive calming signals and strong pack leadership skills.  I can tell you so many stories about how he has helped previously aggressive or undersocialized dogs succeed in learning to socialize and play.  He has even saved lives.  We never imagined this little rescue puppy would grow to be the most amazing dog I have ever met, with innate abilities to protect and nurture.  In many ways, he is unlike any Siberian Husky we have ever met in our career.

Last year, Sirius lost his older packmate sister, Grover to complications from an aggressive chest cavity tumor.  She raised him from a hellion puppy and taught him so much about being gentle with sensitive dogs and seeing through anxious or fearful behaviors to the great potential beneath.  Her loss took the entire family by surprise and left us devastated.  Sirius and Grover were Tammy's dogs (co-owner of Dog Days) before Dog Days was even an idea and Sirius has been our rock since.  He has put his whole heart into being the center of our family pack and being the leader of the Dog Days pack and he has never turned away from his job.  We won't turn away from helping in his time of need either.  The unconditional love, unquestioning devotion, and invaluable work that dogs give us deserves at the very least, this much effort.

Thank you for any contribution you can make!  We will be posting regular updates of recovery and rehabilitation until Sirius is fully recovered.  Expect stories and pictures of his life as well, so keep checking back to this page.  We are grateful for any monetary help, positive thoughts, and well-wishes.  They will all be helping Sirius get back on his feet!
