For the past several years, officers who serve Flagler County have been suffering from illnesses and medical complications resulting from exposure to environmental toxins in the Sheriff Office Command Center. The Command Center operates out of a former hospital that was purchased by Flagler County after being vacant for approximately ten years. The building has never been appropriately tested for environmental problems, and remediation of the structure inadequately addressed potential toxic residue related to both hospital activities or the abandonment period prior to purchase. Now many of the officers who were forced to work in this facility require significant medical care, but the County has denied any responsibility for their illnesses asserting that they can’t prove that their conditions are related to their work environment. The county wants to return these officers to the building, refuses to provide needed medical care, and will not pay for needed additional testing of the building itself. This situation is dire, and these officers require help to pay for site testing, medical evaluations, and detox treatment. These civil servants put their lives on the line each and every day for the citizens of Flagler County. Let's demonstrate to these officers that we value their sacrifices and that we will support their rights to have a safe work environment!
