Help Shirley Mae Get a Mobility Van

Have you ever met a truly exceptional person, a one-in-a-million individual of character and kindness, who triumphs over adversity, and yet through all of their trials and hardships, always puts others first? Shirley Mae Thompson is just such a person.
Due to her disability and lack of a suitable vehicle, Shirley Mae can only leave the house when absolutely necessary to attend doctor’s appointments. Getting her into and out of the unsuitable vehicle causes Shirley Mae physical pain and poses a danger both to her and those assisting her. Unless we are able to raise funds for a mobility van, she may no longer be able to attend church on Sunday, which was the highlight of her week. Her tragic story of medical hardship, written by her daughter, appears below. My husband and I know Shirley Mae and her family from church.
How You Can Help
Friends of Shirley Mae have located a pre-owned mobility van in good condition, with low mileage. A wonderful person has put up his personal funds to purchase the van, until enough money can be raised to pay for it. But we need to raise these funds right away!

Shirley Mae’s Story, as told by her daughter, Sheryl
“This all started in 1990 when my mom had cervical cancer. The radiation treatment caused Lymphedema in her left leg. She had a bad knee but they couldn't do a knee replacement because of all the fluid so they put in a rod that goes from her hip to her ankle. Her right knee hyper extends so it sometimes does go back in place - you have to push it back for her when walking. So she walks about 15-20 steps only. She is mostly wheelchair bound. She has two bad shoulders which need surgery but they can’t do surgery on them because of the walker and wheelchair. So she is in a lot of pain. Shirley has no feeling in her legs from the knee now. For two years now she has been battling wounds. Her skin broke down and because of no feeling went to the bone. She has lost 3 toes because she bought new shoes and didn't know they rubbed her foot to the bone and they were not able to save them. She was admitted into Harrison House nursing home and was non- weight- bearing for 4 months. They tried to save the foot because of the wounds on her heel and the toes. She was finally released and is now home. I’ve taken her to the doctor’s 6 times since she has been home and it’s been the roughest time since I’ve been assisting my mom. The physical therapist was here and watched the transfer and commented that it was the most unsafe and scariest transfer she has ever witnessed. I told her it was all we had and we couldn't afford ambulance transportation. I have a system and it works for us. But she was right it is hard on her and my father. I will add this as I finish. My mother never complains and always remains faithful. She prays and asks the Lord to make a way. She never worries about herself - she worries about us! I wanted to start a go fund me page for this purpose but didn't know if it was a right thing to do. Others may need help and we are making a way. Thank you again. “
