As many of you know (or may not know), I recently moved back to New Orleans, after years of being away, to continue and to build upon the work I have been doing in terms of my art/education/etc. Prior to and since making that decision, I have no doubt that it was the right decision to make. However, since moving, I have experienced setback after setback and have done my best to deal with it all as quietly and by myself as much as possible. Among these setbacks have been issues regarding my car and an ancient laptop that is barely hanging on by a thread, an HDMI cord, and a prayer! (Now, this is not a sob story. Just wanted to give some background for context.)
Thankfully, since relocating, I have also received some great, life-changing opportunities as well--one of them being getting signed by an agency and being accepted to attend NACA (National Association of Campus Activities) conference (many poets' dream!), which will allow me the chance to tour colleges and universities and actually make some "real" money doing my art. As with everything, however, there are costs associated such as application fees, conference fees, promotional materials, travel, lodging, etc. In addition to NACA, I have also decided to finally PUBLISH an actual book after years of being paralyzed by perfectionism and the feeling that my work was not worthy of being published.
I am forever and humbly grateful for the community of friends and supporters (i.e. you!) I have had over the years who have believed in me (even when I don't believe in myself) and who have pushed me (when I feel like giving up). That is why I have finally set aside my pride and worry to ask for your help. (I'm trying to raise this amount by Oct. 10th) What will your contribution help with, you ask? Well, in a nutshell:
-travel to/from my first NACA conference in Oklahoma City in a couple of weeks as well as lodging (and to pay for some of those other fees and materials I previously mentioned)
-a new computer (so that I no longer have to live with the fear of this one dying in the middle of me working on it as it just did while typing this up, causing me to have to re-type it all over again *sigh*)
-upfront costs to self-publish my first book
Here's what you get in return (besides my Love):
$10+: a video shout out + a (consensual) hug when I see you
$20+: all of the above+ a digital download of my book
$50+: all of the above + a signed copy of my book
$100: all of the above + a personalized haiku
$250+: all of the above + an original design t-shirt
$500+: all of the above + a poem I've already written (handwritten or typed, framed, and signed)
$1000+: all of the above + a (local) 15-25 min performance OR an original full poem written for you (about a theme/topic of your choosing handwritten or typed, framed, and signed)
Whether you are able to give or not, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for taking the time to read this and to hopefully send good energy and prayers toward my endeavors (and share this with your network!) as I embark upon this #iCONicJourney.
