My name is Tom Shepherd and I am an Audiometrist currently working in Fiji.
I recently came into contact with a lovely young Fijian family seeking help for their daughter who has a congenital hearing loss that cannot be assisted through provision of a hearing aid.
Shabia is five years old and her parents are concerned that she is not learning at school and fearful that she will be unable to exist in a world that relies so heavily on hearing ability in order to gain meaningful work.
She is unable to hear the loudest of sounds and her only hope is for a cochlear implant - a device that is surgically implanted in order to stimulate the auditory nerve through gentle electrical impulses - basically availing her of near ‘normal’ hearing ability.
This device is not currently accessible in Fiji.
Her family do not have the resources to access this specialised procedure that will require travel to New Zealand or Australia.
Her only hope for assistance is through the generosity of others.
I fully intend to see this eventuate but cannot manage it alone.
Any additional funds collected, beyond the actual cost of the procedure, supply of the instrumentation, travel and accommodation costs will be utilised to ensure her educational needs are met.
Please help me to make this little girl’s life worthwhile and provide a wonderful result for her family.
