Who is Muscat Dog Adoption?
- Muscat Dog Adoption (MDA) is a dog rescue organisation established in 2012 and run by a group of dog-loving volunteers in Muscat, Oman. MDA aims to rescue abandoned and injured dogs in Muscat. Once in MDA's care, the dogs receive necessary veterinary treatment such as vaccinations against diseases, neutering/spaying, worm and flea treatment and any other treatment that may be required.
- From 2012-2022, we had a makeshift pound which was a safe refuge to keep the newly rescued dogs off the streets while we looked for their forever homes but this closed down in July 2022.
- We opened a new shelter in December 2022 which we were kicked out of in September 2023 :/
- We have nearly finished construction of our new shelter which will be home to 30 rescued wadi dogs.
The difficulty of animal rescue in Oman:
- Oman has no animal welfare laws yet; consequently, there is no government funding for charities or shelters. It is, therefore, very challenging rescuing animals with limited resources.
The difficulty of rehoming our dogs in Oman:
- Wadi dogs are not popular in Oman and are viewed by many as feral or just street dogs when in fact, wadi dogs make wonderful pets. They're brilliant, loyal and loving and all deserve a home and family of their own. Local adoption rates are low each year. Out of the many dogs we rescue each year, only about a handful find homes locally, most of which are puppies. Therefore, we rely on overseas adopters to provide the forever-loving homes that our dogs deserve.
How your donation will help:
The approximate cost of sending a dog to the UK is £1200. Below is a breakdown of the costs:
135 OMR plane ticket (on Qatar airways)
50 OMR export paperwork
95 OMR travel crate (depends on the size of the dog)
500 GBP pet taxi cost (approx as the price depends on the location in the UK)
Although the UK adopters pay an adoption fee, this only covers about half of the above travel costs, so we always need to fundraise for travel costs.
