Hello everyone! Thank you so much for pressing on the link to find out more/help donate to Dylan's Fund.
Dylan has had a remarkable journey playing the tuba. It all started when he was in kindergarten and wanted "to be just like his dad". Joe gave him a baby euphonium to teach him Mary had a Little Lamb and the rest is history.
As a graduating 8th Grader, Dylan auditioned and has been accepted to the Middle School Honor Series Band at Carnegie Hall this summer!! He will be playing with 75 of the best musicians chosen from The United States and Canada. He is one of only two or three tuba players from the entire country selected. We couldn't be prouder and are looking for some help to pay for this one in a lifetime opportunity.
We have made plans to be there with him in New York but his cost for the Honor Series Carnegie Program itself is about $3000. This will cover his instruction, hotel, attractions, and the hefty cost of transporting a tuba! We are not asking for help with airfare, our hotel expenses or our cost to see him because we will continue our summer vacation while he is rehearsing in New York (so we don't feel right asking for help with our vacation) but any help with the Carnegie portion would be immensely appreciated. We have always tried to teach our kids that if they really want something, they need to work hard and not be afraid to ask for help to get to their goal. Dylan started his own business, DMurfs Cases (making custom leather-made brass mouthpiece covers) , two years ago showing us that he is committed to working hard for his continuing goals!
If you're looking at this site and you don't know who we (the Murphy's) are, let me tell you a little about ourselves. I (Joe) have been the Band Director at Tierra Linda Middle School in San Carlos, CA for 13 years. I am a professional musician and I also have a wonderful private studio (which Dylan happens to be in). My wife, Sara, is an opera singer who is the music director at St. Charles Parish in San Carlos. She is also the Music Director at St. Charles Catholic School and the Choir Director at Tierra Linda Middle School. We are ALWAYS very busy working on different musical events in our community. From school to church to community theater, we surround ourselves with music daily doing what we love. Our kids have been along for the crazy ride of musician parents and have made music a great passion of theirs too.
We live in the heart of Silicon Valley which makes living REALLY expensive but we feel it's worth it to be in this diverse, rich, creative culture among some of the smartest, most creative people in the country. As teachers and church workers, we don't make a TON of money but the community really takes care of us. We are so grateful and appreciative to everyone who has taken the time to read this and wanting to help Dylan out. Please feel free to forward this on if you would like.
