Help send Angelita to College

Donation protected
As some of you may know, four years ago I joined iMentor and was matched with a freshman at The Young Women’s Leadership School of Brooklyn named Angelita. iMentor partners with high schools throughout NYC and builds relationships between first-generation students from low-income communities and young professionals to support and empower them to graduate high school, succeed in college, and achieve their ambitions.

Over the last four years, I shared my advice and experiences with Angelita as she worked her way through high school and set her hopes on going to college. In this short time, she has taught me a lot about overcoming adversity and embracing change. Angelita was born in Mexico and came to the United States when she was a few months old without documentation. After her sophomore year, Angelita’s parents decided they wanted to return to Mexico to raise her and her brothers. Realizing that her dream may be cut short, she arranged to stay in the US and move in with relatives and promised to tutor her cousins as a way to show her appreciation. She has worked extremely hard to prove that she deserves to be here. She’s been on the honor roll every semester and this year was enrolled in multiple AP classes (AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Literature) and was also one of just 2 students chosen in the senior class to enroll in a business class at Brooklyn College.  Her drive and work ethic helped secure her spot at the top of her graduating class.

This year, Angelita applied and got into 10+ different universities. Because she doesn’t qualify for government aid, she hoped to receive the Dream Scholarship, which provides funding for immigrant youth who are not eligible. Unfortunately, she was not chosen amongst the thousands of applicants, and therefore has decided to attend Queensborough Community College this fall. One semester at Queensborough is $2,500. I will be contributing $500 each semester and I am hoping to raise $10,000 to cover her first two years of school. She plans to transfer to a four year institution from there and has big dreams of becoming a doctor or an engineer.
