<div>Hi folks! Scott's daughter, Emily, here to ask you for your help to keep Scott afloat while he is unable to work and is recovering from an allergic reaction to medication.

<div>Since May, my dad has been experiencing weakness and rapid muscle loss. After some scary fainting episodes and several trips to the ER, we finally got an answer in June–he is experiencing something called <strong>necrotizing myositis</strong> (a kind of rhabdomyolysis), a rare condition that, in his case, was an even rarer side effect of a medication he had been taking for a year.

<div>Essentially, <strong>his immune system has turned on his own muscles causing his own body to eat away at them</strong>. Necrotizing myositis is very rare and is affecting his upper arms, upper legs, and core muscles. <strong>Since April, he's lost 40 pounds of muscle.</strong> And the enzymes eating his muscles take a long time to leave his body (weeks if not months), so even though he stopped taking the medication that started it, he's still been losing muscle.

<div>After his first hospital stay in June, we were hopeful for his recovery. We finally had some answers for the scary thing that was happening, and were thankful that it seemed as simple as stopping the medication that triggered it. However, the recovery has proven much longer than we anticipated.

<div>In the month after that first hospital stay, my dad's condition didn't improve. Just walking up and down his apartment hallway would wipe him out for the day, getting out of his chair was <em>really </em>hard, and he couldn't reach up for a glass in his kitchen cabinet–everyday things we all take for granted.
</div>

<div>The same week he reached out to his siblings for help he had another scary fainting episode that banged him up a bit (scared his family) and sent him back to the hospital.
</div>

<div>For two weeks after that stay, my dad stayed at an outpatient rehab place to build strength so he could safely be home again.
</div>

</div>
<div>Luckily, he's built enough muscle back to be sent home (yay! progress!) but we've all had a healthy reality check for how long it will take him to recover enough to put on a suit and tie and get back to work (months).
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>That's where you come in!</strong> Our family is looking at his options for short term disability, but those programs aren't guaranteed and sometimes take a <em>long long</em> time to payout. My dad hasn't worked since June 9th, and even before then he wasn't working to his full capacity as his muscles started fading. He's already had to dip into savings to cover rent and other bills, and is going to run out before the next month of rent is due.

<div>Your support will help him get his literal and figurative feet under him, helping him buy food and pay rent and bills while he gets stronger and starts gaining back the 40 pounds of muscle he's lost. We don't know how long it will be until he can go back to work, and as impatient as my dad is to put his suit and tie back on and start driving again, I think we're looking at months before that will be possible.
