My name is Scott, the owner and proprietor of Darling Range Gunsmithing. I am a licenced Firearm Repairer and Manufacturer based in Western Australia. I am happily married and have two young children.
Over the past 2 years, I have been the subject of a targeted campaign of harassment by Western Australia Police. This culminated in the suspension of my licences and the confiscation of all the firearms in my possession, including those that belong to my private and government clients. I have been charged with 15 offences and will need to appear in court in July 2018.
I am both confused and astonished by this. Everything I have done in the course of my work has been with the approval of WA Police and in accordance with the law as it is written. I have been unable to work as a result, resulting in my wife having to return to work full time when our baby was only 2 months old.
According to my lawyer, this will be a landmark case for firearms law in Australia. This will likely set a precedent that, should I lose, will allow the police to easily target other gunsmiths, firearms dealers, professional and recreational law-abiding firearm owners due to vague and subjective interpretations of the law.
This entire situation has been hugely distressing and damaging to my family and I. The financial consequences are enormous and I daresay we will continue to struggle. This will be compounded through the cost of my defence in court, as I have enlisted the help of a lawyer.
I am hopeful that there may be people out there that could assist me with the fighting fund. I recognise that firearms are not popular in the opinions of the general public, however firearms do exist in Australia for legitimate purposes and someone has to work on them. I am hopeful for a win in court so that I can continue to do this important job and support my family.
