Shortly after the bill was signed into law, the ACLU and the Legal Voice filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of Lindsay Hecox, a man who ‘identifies’ as a woman, and another female student athlete (Jane Doe), contending that the law was discriminatory as well as unconstitutional. The outcome of this lawsuit has vast implications for women’s sports not only in Idaho, but across the nation. Of note, Louisiana, Arizona, Alabama and Tennessee have introduced similar bills.
WHRC USA is raising money to fund the filing of an amicus (friend of the court) brief in this important case that may set a precedent for future cases in women’s sports. Sound legal guidance is necessary with regard to the drafting, editing, formatting, and filing of the brief. The estimated cost to cover all anticipated expenses is $3,000.
WHRC USA is committed to doing everything we can to see that our brief is filed by the deadline of November 19. To that end, we need your help and ask that you consider making a non-tax deductible donation in support of this effort. We thank you in advance for any contribution you are able to make! We will keep you all updated on news about this case as it develops.
Women’s Human Rights Campaign-USA is the American chapter of an international organization dedicated to protecting women’s sex-based rights. Our founding document, the Declaration on Women’s Sex-Based Rights, re-affirms women and girls' sex-based rights as enumerated in the 1979 Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and subsequent international agreements, and challenges the discrimination we experience from the replacement of the category of sex with that of ‘gender identity’. The Declaration is a clear call to law and policy makers to retain the sex-based biological definition of woman. WHRC is a nonpartisan organization.
