The Starfish Story - by Loren Eisley

Once upon a time, there was an old man who used to go to the ocean to do his writing. He had a habit of walking on the beach every morning before he began his work. Early one morning, he was walking along the shore after a big storm had passed and found the vast beach littered with starfish as far as the eye could see, stretching in both directions.

Off in the distance, the old man noticed a small boy approaching.  As the boy walked, he paused every so often and as he grew closer, the man could see that he was occasionally bending down to pick up an object and throw it into the sea.  The boy came closer still and the man called out, “Good morning!  May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young boy paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean. The tide has washed them up onto the beach and they can’t return to the sea by themselves,” the youth replied. “When the sun gets high, they will die, unless I throw them back into the water.”

The old man replied, “But there must be tens of thousands of starfish on this beach. I’m afraid you won’t really be able to make much of a difference.”

The boy bent down, picked up yet another starfish and threw it as far as he could into the ocean. Then he turned, smiled and said,

“It made a difference to that one!”

Friends and family,

As most of you know I am a horse lover. I have been all of my life. When I am with  horses I feel complete and alive. Horses have always given me a sense of comfort through some of the toughest times of my life. They bring me so much peace and joy that I spend as much time as I can caring for them through my work with Mane Gait where I started out shoveling poop just to be surrounded by the animals I love!

Two days ago I was scrolling through Facebook, looking at funny videos, when a post caught my attention. It was about a horse that is at a local kill pen and I felt an immediate connection to her. As weird as it sounds, that horse is "me."

A kill pen is where horses go to just before they are sold for slaughter. According to The Humane Society, "92.3% of American horses sent to slaughter are healthy and would be able to live out happy lives if given the chance."

Her last chance situation and her story really stood out to me. I feel drawn to her because she is in a similar situation to what I had been in. Someone had given up on her. Someone said she was worthless. I've been there, too.

And, while my animal-loving heart wants to save all the unwanted animals out there, my soul tells me that this one is special. So, I'm asking you to help me raise the funds needed to rescue her and get her to a safe place by the end of this week.

If she is not rescued by THIS FRIDAY, she will be sent to slaughter. From the information I have gathered, she is a little underweight but has no major health issues. She is one of the 92.3%.

I have already found discounted boarding for the summer thanks to a close friend's family and will need to get her healthy while I find a permanent home for her.

Thank you so much for your support...it makes a difference to this one!
