During Covid-19 lockdown, St Nicks, where this gem of a shop is located, has been closed and now the owner of the shop wants to sell and concentrate on his main business. We want to buy it!!!
Von's been working in the shop only a few months but has been shopping there as a crafter and maker since moving to Bristol in 1992. And Phoebe started working in the market in 2019 and instantly fell in love with the shop! In one form or another, the shop has existed on this site for around 40 years, and we want to keep it going!
We've managed to secure funding to buy it, but we want to give the place the love and care that it deserves! (Along with making it a safe environment for social distancing)
Between us we have several years of experience working in retail and being self employed. We're really excited about the prospect of running the place. We don't want to make big changes, just improvements. We'll still stock ALL the buttons and LOADS of wool as well as the usual haberdashery and craft.
We want to replace the dirty old carpet and put some new shelving up, maximising the space for storage and give our customers a clean, safe shop to come into. We'd love a computer...drag it into the 21st century! This will enable us to do all our work online, accounts, orders and all other aspects of running a shop. It also means better access for our customers to buy the things they want.
We have a plan to change the layout slightly, moving the till area so there's more room to shop, perhaps in time, room for small workshops. We want to make things in the shop too, masks being our first plan. So we'll need a sewing machine.
With the fabric stall closed down recently, we'd love to offer a choice of quality prints and blocks for your sewing projects. If we can find the space!
We've got amazing customers, loyal and generous with their time and skills. We want to be there for them, and give them the shopping experience they deserve, along with saving a piece of St Nickolas market that's been there for decades!
It's more than just a shop. It's a hub, a safe space, a place to learn, and more importantly, it's a community and a cherished part of the market.
