<div><strong>Mitchel’s Transplant Journey: A Miracle, and a Long Road Ahead</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>On <strong>November 10, 2025</strong>, Mitchel received the gift of life through a <strong>deceased donor liver transplant</strong>. Just days before, his health had taken a terrifying turn. His MELD score—a measure of liver disease severity—rose from 26 to 29, then to 36, and finally to 39 in less than a week. For those unfamiliar, the MELD score ranges from 6–40, with higher numbers meaning greater risk. A score of 39 meant Mitchel was at the very edge of survival.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Doctors at Mayo Clinic told us plainly: Mitchel would not leave the hospital without a new liver. On November 10th, that call finally came. Thanks to the selfless gift of a deceased donor, Mitchel was given a second chance at life. Our gratitude to this donor and their family is beyond words.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But while the transplant saved his life, the fight is far from over. Recovery after transplant is long, difficult, and filled with challenges.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Mitchel’s Story</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Mitchel is just 37 years old. A devoted husband, loving father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. He’s the kind of dad who makes his kids, Dayton (13) and Penelope (6), feel like the center of the universe. He’s a quiet guy with a big heart, always ready to help anyone who asks. His favorite things to do are hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and spending time outdoors, especially on the lake with family. He’s a diligent worker, full of grit and kindness.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But for the past year, those passions were stolen by illness. Weekly paracentesis drained fluid from his abdomen just so he could breathe and move. His body grew weaker, his skin jaundiced, and his kidneys began to fail. Every day was a battle to survive until the transplant came.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Mitchel’s Medical History: Alpha‑1 Antitrypsin Deficiency</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Mitchel was born with Alpha‑1 Antitrypsin Deficiency (A1ATD), a rare genetic disorder that most people have never heard of. Alpha‑1 is caused by a missing or defective protein that normally protects the lungs and liver. Without it, the liver slowly accumulates damage over time.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For years, Alpha‑1 was a silent passenger in Mitchel’s life. He lived, worked, built a family, and chased the same dreams most people have. But inside, the disease was quietly attacking his liver. Eventually, it led to decompensated cirrhosis, a severe stage of liver disease where the liver can no longer perform its vital functions.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Silent progression:</strong> For much of his life, Mitchel looked healthy, even as his liver was deteriorating.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Sudden decline:</strong> In 2024, his health began to collapse—fluid retention, swelling, jaundice, and exhaustion became constant.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Life-threatening stage:</strong> By 2025, his MELD score soared, and his only chance of survival was a transplant.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Alpha‑1 is relentless.</strong> It doesn’t just affect the liver—it can also impact the lungs. For Mitchel, the liver damage was devastating enough to bring him to the brink of death.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div> <strong>Honoring Our Living Donor Volunteers</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Before Mitchel received his transplant from a deceased donor, we were urgently searching for a living donor. During that time, incredible people—friends, family, and even strangers—came forward and offered to undergo testing to see if they could give a part of their liver to save his life.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Even though a living donation did not happen, we want to pause and honor those who volunteered. The selflessness, courage, and love it takes to consider such a gift is beyond words. To stand up and say, “I am willing to give a part of myself so you can live,” is a level of generosity that can never be repaid.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>To everyone who stepped forward: thank you. Your willingness gave us hope during the darkest days. You reminded us that humanity is full of light, compassion, and bravery. No words will ever be enough to express our gratitude for what you were willing to do for Mitchel and our family.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>A New Chapter: Recovery After Transplant</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Now that Mitchel has received his transplant, the journey continues—and it is not easy.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Out of Work:</strong> Mitchel cannot work during recovery, leaving our family without his income.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Living in Rochester:</strong> We must remain in Rochester for at least a month so Mayo can closely monitor his progress. This means added costs for housing, food, and daily living away from home.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Medical Expenses:</strong> Even with insurance, the bills for surgery, medications, and follow-up care are overwhelming.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Daily Challenges:</strong> Recovery is physically exhausting and emotionally draining. Every day brings new hurdles as Mitchel rebuilds his strength and adjusts to life with his transplant.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This is not the end of the fight—it is the beginning of a long, demanding road toward healing.
</div>
