My mom, Leticia, is the heart and soul of La Brioche Bakery—a little slice of Argentina that has been a home away from home for so many in our community. She started this bakery in 2014 with nothing but a dream and the hope of bringing people together through food. Now, after a decade of hard work and dedication, we’re facing a heartbreaking reality: we’re out of options, and without help, we may have to close our doors for good.

<div>Like many small businesses, the pandemic hit us hard, and we’ve been struggling to recover ever since. No matter how hard we work, the bills keep piling up, and staying afloat has become harder and harder. To make things worse, the city recently changed our operating requirements. For years, we were regulated by the Department of Agriculture, which didn’t require us to have a customer restroom. But now, without explanation, we’ve been moved to the Utah County Health Department, and suddenly, we’re required to build one—something we simply can’t afford right now.

<div>My mom has done everything in her power to keep La Brioche going. She’s an incredibly strong and generous person, always helping others without ever asking for anything in return. But now, she’s the one who needs help. On top of everything, she’s facing two surgeries over the next three months, meaning she won’t be able to work as much as she normally does. The stress of it all has been overwhelming.

<div>My sisters Flor, Mili and I still believe there’s hope, but we can’t do this alone. That’s why we’re turning to our community, our friends—anyone who believes in small businesses and the places that bring people together. <div>Hola a todos, mi nombre es Yamila y hoy les escribo con el corazón en la mano. Mi mamá, Leticia, es la dueña de La Brioche Bakery, una panadería que ha sido un hogar para nuestra comunidad, un pedacito de Argentina en esta ciudad. Ella comenzó esta panadería en el 2014 con nada más que un sueño y la esperanza de reunir a las personas a través de la comida. Hoy, lamentablemente, estamos en nuestro último recurso.

<div>Desde la pandemia, nuestra panadería ha luchado por mantenerse a flote. Nos hemos esforzado al máximo, pero las deudas se han ido acumulando y, por más que trabajamos día y noche, parece que nunca logramos salir adelante. Ahora, además de todo, nos enfrentamos a nuevas exigencias de la ciudad. Durante años, operamos bajo el Departamento de Agricultura, que no requería que tuviéramos un baño. Sin embargo, recientemente y sin explicación, nos trasladaron al Departamento de Salud, que sí lo exige. Esta nueva regulación nos obliga a construir un baño y hacer otras modificaciones que simplemente no podemos costear. Apenas alcanzamos para vivir el día a día, y se nos está haciendo difícil mantenernos.

<div>Mi mamá ha hecho todo lo posible para mantener La Brioche abierta. Ella es una mujer increíblemente fuerte y generosa, siempre dispuesta a ayudar a los demás sin pedir nada a cambio. Pero esta vez, es ella quien necesita ayuda. En las próximas semanas, deberá someterse a dos cirugías en un lapso de tres meses, lo que la obligará a descansar y limitará lo mucho que puede hacer durante ese tiempo. Esto añade aún más estrés y preocupación a una situación que ya es difícil.
