Help Save Gender Justice Nevada

Tax deductible
When Chris returned home from college one day and told their family that they didn’t identify with the sex/gender they’d been assigned at birth, their parents didn’t know what to say or how to feel. Had they done something wrong? Was this just a phase? Was it too late to change Chris’ mind?

The months that followed were an unhappy time for Chris and their parents. Almost every conversation devolved into a yelling match, and Chris wondered if they should stop coming home from college during breaks. Their family seemed to be on the verge of collapse.

But then Chris and their parents discovered Gender Justice Nevada. They started sharing space in support groups with others going through similar things and attending counseling sessions with an experienced and knowledgeable family therapist. The cloud that seemed to hang over them slowly dissipated. In time, Chris’ parents moved from confusion and denial to understanding and affirmation. These days they help other parents cope with the challenges of transitioning.

More than 40,000 transgender, intersex and other sex/gender diverse persons live in Southern Nevada, and many of them aren’t as lucky as Chris. Some are ostracized from their families altogether. Others face harassment and discrimination, sometimes daily. Chronic depression and symptoms of PTSD related to living in such hostile environments are serious problems for sex/gender diverse persons, and the suicide rate for those who don’t feel supported as they make honest changes in their lives is significantly higher than for those who have a strong support system.

Gender Justice Nevada’s mission is to be that support system for sex/gender diverse adults, youth, and families. We offer a host of no-fee services for transgender, including:

-Individual and family counseling and professionally-led support groups
-Help with transition-related needs in schools, hospitals and workplaces
-Legal services pertaining to employment discrimination and health insurance denials
-Identity document changes, such as name and sex/gender markers on driver licenses
-Training for medical, educational, and legal professionals
-Public policy advocacy for statutory and regulatory changes, including school district policies

Over the past four years, Gender Justice Nevada has served 600 people like Chris and their family in Southern Nevada, but there are so many more people who need these essential services. With your generous help, we can expand our reach and provide support for those who desperately need it.

We’re a 501(c)3 organization, so your donation is tax deductible. And if you donate before July 1, every dollar you give will be TRIPLED thanks to matching grants from the Ritter Charitable Trust and the Roger Thomas Collection and Thomas & Mack Foundation (on behalf of Drew Chatterton Thomas).

We rely on the generosity of people like you. Without your help, people like Chris and their family would struggle alone. Please help us support our sex/gender diverse communities so no one has to suffer needlessly.
