Hello, friends.
Lots of you know my sweet Elfie. I adopted her four years ago after she had been a stray, and she's been the moment-by-moment joy of my world ever since.
In the middle of the night last night, she woke up from sleep screaming in pain. She tried to reposition herself but kept screaming in pain when she tried. Ditto walking -- impossible. She was finally able to find a way to lie so that if she was perfectly still she could doze.
In the morning I brought her to VCA Bay Area Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Hospital. They admitted her and were able to get her on pain meds, but she was still shrieking in pain even after the IV of opiates, so they put on another pain med patch which will hopefully start to lessen her pain in the next twenty-four hours.
The vet said it is likely a problem with her spinal cord in her neck area, and that she will likely need an MRI tomorrow, and that it's possible she will need surgery to correct whatever is impinging on her nerves.
The vet also said [crying emoji] that if I were not able to fund a possible MRI or surgery, that they would have to euthanize her.
Elfie is such a ball of love, she's kept me stable (really, truly been my one anchor) during these last pummeling four years. I would really like her to live.
The Cost
So far my costs have been $2941.78 to get her admitted, get pain meds, and get a consultation with a neurologist tomorrow.
The vet said that the likely necessary MRI will cost around $5000, and surgery could cost around $10,000.
My most immediate goal is to be able to get her the MRI, so that we can know with more certainty what's causing her pain, and so that I can have some sense of how effective any possible treatment would be.
If surgery is necessary and if the odds are good she could make a recovery and live a good life -- she's only seven years old! -- I'll come back and update this fundraiser.
The Timeline
I'm expecting to have to pay for an MRI on Wednesday 1/13/21, so soon-funds are so helpful.
I will update you here often, and may be able to keep her comfortable on pain meds while I gather funds, so please don't assume that if it's after 1/13 that the fundraiser is over.
