Help Save Del Mar Horsepark

WE NEED YOUR help as a public-private partnership with the cash-strapped Fairgrounds to Save Del Mar Horsepark:
Both the Fairgrounds Board and the public need to know more from third-party experts in water quality management. The Fairgrounds has started public workshops to come up with various solutions, the first on January 29, 2021.  At that workshop, we presented water protection infrastructure already installed and maintained by the owner, 22nd DAA. The Horsepark Committee asked for our help in finding a cost-effective solution to further water remediation.

YOUR DONATIONS support finding a effective, cost-effective solution to get horses back to Horsepark.

On February 3, Friends of Del Mar Horsepark engaged a TRWE, a well-respected, experienced San Diego County water engineering consulting group headed by Tory R. Walker, PE, CFM, LEED GA, QISP.
Mr. Walker is a registered Professional Engineer, a Certified Floodplain Manager, and a widely recognized storm water quality expert, with 35 years’ experience in water resources planning and engineering. He has provided his services to a broad range of public and private industry clients in California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, and Arizona.

TRWE can recommend cost-effective solutions and assist in compliance with all storm water regulations at Horsepark.
The San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board has indicated that a well-prepared Alternative Compliance strategy will hold the key to successful storm water management and compliance.https://www.trwengineering.com

Friends of Del Mar Horsepark continues to recommend leasing Horsepark to a well-capitalized, knowledgeable equine operator who can generate profits for the 22nd DAA, provide needed facility upgrades and water remediation, and include a public riding school.

We are helping the Horsepark Committee in finding cost-effective solutions to water issues, so that they can re-open Horsepark sooner rather than later.  We look forward to the Horsepark Committee’s recommendations at the next Fairgrounds Board ZOOM meeting on February 9, 2021.

Del Mar Horsepark is our region's only remaining public equestrian sports facility and public riding school. Since 1978, generations of children and families learned to ride and care for horses. Horsepark cannot be replaced, as it is a priceless asset at the heart of our equestrian heritage, and our community.

The Horsepark owner—Del Mar Fairgrounds (22nd DAA)— “paused” horse shows and evicted the public riding school, citing threat of litigation as their main concern after Orange County Coastkeeper lawsuits regarding horse property water quality protection.

On January 12, 2021, Richard Valdez, Fairgrounds Board President, asked for public help in meeting their obligations to reopen Horsepark and comply with regional water quality standards. The Fairgrounds Board operates on a shoestring now, due to severe financial constraints from the Covid-19 shut-down of Fairgrounds events. Our independent studies can help cut this “pause” short and get the horses back to Horsepark.

We are united in our goal for equestrian activities to resume at Horsepark as quickly as possible so the that “pause” does not become permanent and the facility degrades from lack of use.

Any unused funds will be contributed to a local therapeutic riding nonprofit such as Horses for Heroes—Ivey Ranch Park Association and Cornerstone Therapeutic Riding center.
