Amy, a precious mom at our school, has been diagnosed with retinitis pigmemtosa. What this means is that over the years she could completely lose her vision. Given "time" to prepare, she believed this would happen over years. But, it hit her SUDDENLY over Labor Day weekend. Most of her sight left that day. She can now see as though she's looking through a small tunnel, so clearly her window of time for sight has become much smaller.
In order for Amy, a mom of two adorable girls, to function as a mom and in her job, she will need many tools to support her. But these tools come at a huge expense, most not covered by insurance. Her job has been a big blessing to her, working to help her with larger monitors to still be able to work and many other things
. But, she needs softaware, magnifying tools and a video magnifier, a OCR reader machine that attaches to her glasses so that if she points at something on a screen, it will read it back to her. She will need transportation as she can no longer drive and she will need to get a guide dog. She is also going to be undergoing many procedures to slow the process of blindness.
There is no cure for Amy's disease but we are hoping to support her as she continues to go through treatment, to help with all the medical bills, and to prepare for the coming months.
In addition to Amy's struggles, her youngest daughter, Becca, is also very ill. Doctors are working on genetic testing to see if they can find out what is causing her so many issues. She is abnormally tiny for no apparent reason. Her feet most often have blisters covering the bottoms that is incredibly painful. We have to put ointment of them, wrap them in Saran wrap and slippers, and most of us carry her from place to place. Just imagine having this on your plate as a mom while you are losing your sight. It is just too much.
Amy is married to her wonderful husband, Marcus. Marcus is in nursing school and until he graduates, Amy is the sole means of support for her family. Please, search your heart and see if you can help us reach her much needed goal.
