Help Satmar-Hasidic Med Student become Doctor

Hi friends, my name is Nisi and I'm a third year medical student. I attend the Medical School for International Health (an affiliate school of Columbia University), a program that in addition to offering a traditional MD education, prepares its students for a career in global health, helping the underprivileged. We learn about the social determinants of health and how factors like poverty and geography impact illness.
I chose this school because more than anything, I believe that health depends so much on these social factors, in other words, if a person can afford good healthcare and they live in a developed country, they may have a higher chance of staying alive longer and having a better quality of life. And if that is the case, I believe physicians should truly consider these aspects in their day to day practice.
In my early education, I studied social sciences and premedical studies. I am a licensed social worker by the state of New York and global health is where my passions for medicine and social work come together.
Additionally, I am so proud to be the first woman from my community to be in Medical School.
I grew up in a closed religious community in Williamsburg, Brooklyn called Satmar. Despite being in New York I grew up speaking mostly Yiddish and my secular education was minimal.
I have so much love for my family and community and fond memories growing up. But I've also had to fight really hard to get to where I am today. I had to work on my English, jump-start my education, learn the culture outside the Satmar community, find support networks, and much more.
Financially it was also difficult, but I managed to get scholarships, student loans, some support from family, and many small jobs to get by. This is why I'm reaching out. I have been taking out student loans but with $38,500 of tuition per year (multiplied by four years) it really adds up. With this campaign, my hope is to take out less in loans.
My intention is to keep this page open throughout the next 1.5 years of my education (as I'm still paying tuition) and the years of residency thereafter (as I repay student loans) to remain open to receiving funding and donations during this time.
My goal as a future physician is to provide care for under-served as well as chassidic and charedi communities with excellence and compassion.
In addition, my hope is to pave this path for many more women who want to become doctors, lawyers, architects or anything else. Culturally, Hasidic women, whether housewives (like my dear mother, sisters, and cousins), entrepreneurs, students, or professionals are very, very strong women. Specifically, when they leave the fold, it takes courage and bravery to do so. I hope to inspire others to get an education and live a life of honesty and truth, whatever that is for each person. You can become anyone you want, no matter where you were born.
