*VIDEO OF PROGRESS BELOW**Hi, my name is Megan and I'm fundraising for my sister, Sara Guhr. Sara experienced several complications during and after the birth of her first child in July 2022.
- The nerves in her pelvis were smashed during labor which resulted in the loss of movement in her left leg in two directions.
- The epidural failed and put toxicity into her bloodstream (local anesthetic systemic toxicity). Her life was saved by the antidote. Doctors put her completely under to perform the C-section.
- These events caused Piriformis Syndrome, an excess of inflammation in her spine, and major lymphatic issues.
Due to all of the above plus a rare neuro immune disorder from childhood (Transverse Myelitis) her body did not respond as it should to heal the injuries. Instead, it went into a state of shock and overprotectiveness causing most of the muscles and ligaments to tighten in the lower half of her body. This caused extreme pain and not being able to extend her leg. The muscles connected to the diaphragm also tightened in the abdomen and pulled with every breath. Because all those muscles were connected to each other, breathing and movement would pull and cause severe neuropathic pain on the low back and down to the foot.
After being in this state for so many months, her body became even more confused and began sending wrong signals to the brain so that any type of tissue movement (walking, moving, stretching) was seen as a huge injury that needed to be protected against. This caused her body to go into an even bigger overprotective state. Her brain began to get used to these wrong signals as the new normal and started to work against any progress and cause amplified pain.
In order to fix this problem, Sara has attended physical therapy, chiropractic care, and applied kinesiology sessions to begin to reset her pain system buffer and retrain her brain and body. This is a very slow and painful process. Her body is slowing getting out of its protective state and her muscles and tissues are becoming re-aligned.
However, her insurance is no longer covering any of the therapy sessions she needs in order to regain full independence. For almost a year, Sara has needed a caregiver to help her with daily tasks. She spent the majority of 9 months confined to a chair in her living room. We are so thankful that Sara had the opportunity to attend a week long intensive care therapy session that helped her make leaps and bounds and she is now able to walk, hold her daughter, and regained a lot of her functional independence. However, she is still dealing with large amounts of pain, lymphatic build-up, and the slow process of training her body to get out of its overprotective state.
Even though she has progressed so much she needs more therapy which is the reason for this fundraiser! Her future goals include; gaining more functional movement, driving independently, ability to sit on the floor and play with her daughter, walk up and down a flight of stairs on her own, alleviate pain and continue the progress on retraining her brain and body. Any amount given will go towards the following therapies (physical therapy, applied kinesiology, and lymphatic massage (to help drain excess fluid).
I'd also like to ask for prayers that Sara will be completely healed and the financial burden will be lessoned. If you can, please share this fundraiser link! Thank you so much for considering helping Sara!
