<div>Santiago es un niño de cinco años alegre e increíblemente resiliente que ama la música y baila cada vez que la escucha. A pesar de todo el dolor que ha enfrentado, todavía encuentra maneras de jugar y sacar sonrisas a quienes lo rodean—incluso a las enfermeras después de una crisis. Santiago nació prematuramente, sin signos vitales, y tuvo que ser reanimado antes de ser colocado en ventilación mecánica. Durante sus primeros días, se le insertó un catéter que desafortunadamente causó una ruptura en su vena porta, lo que llevó a una condición rara y grave llamada cavernomatosis.

<div>Debido a esto, Santiago sufre de várices esofágicas, que provocan hemorragias intestinales frecuentes y peligrosas. Su última crisis fue en febrero, y cada episodio pone su vida en riesgo. La única forma de darle a Santiago una verdadera oportunidad de un futuro normal en el que sea un niño sano es una cirugía compleja, la cual dura ocho horas para crear una nueva conexión entre sus vasos sanguíneos. Esta cirugía no está disponible en ningún hospital público en Venezuela,  y requiere un equipo de especialistas, inclincluyendo un cirujano cardiovascular, un hepatólogo, un cirujano general, entre otros. Después de la operación, Santiago necesitará cuidados intensivos para recuperarse. Sin esta cirugía, podría perder la función de su riñón izquierdo y de su hígado, y el riesgo de fallo multiorgánico aumenta con cada crisis. Despite all the pain he has faced, he still finds ways to play and bring smiles to those around him—even the nurses after a crisis. Santiago was born prematurely, without vital signs, and had to be resuscitated before being placed on mechanical ventilation. During his early days, a catheter was inserted that unfortunately caused a rupture in his portal vein, leading to a rare and serious condition called cavernomatosis.

<div> Because of this, Santiago suffers from esophageal varices, which cause frequent and dangerous intestinal hemorrhages. His last crisis was in February, and each episode puts his life at risk. The only way to give Santiago a real chance at a healthy future is a complex, eight-hour surgery to create a new connection between his blood vessels. This surgery is not available in any public hospital in Venezuela, where he lives, and requires a team of specialists, including a cardiovascular surgeon, a hepatologist, and a general surgeon. After the operation, Santiago will need intensive care to recover. Without this surgery, he could lose his left kidney and liver function, and the risk of multi-organ failure increases with every crisis.
