Sam even had a proper asylum visa which is no longer recognized. Before he was detained in January, Sam had worked incredibly hard to build a small home renovation business in South Florida. While he was detained, his business dried up, his car was repossessed, and he lost the essential tools he relied on to make a living. He was also transferred to California, where he endured months of extremely difficult circumstances far from home, work, and community.

The legal work that helped his release has left him with $10,000 in immigration legal fees, and after months without income, he is trying to rebuild from almost nothing.
