Help Sahar Go to Uni So She Can Change the World

Donation protected
My wonderful young friend Sahar has been accepted into a Bachelor of International Studies/Bachelor of Laws degree commencing in 2022. Because she is a refugee on a temporary visa, Sahar has to pay full fees unless she gets a scholarship. I am first raising money for the deposit required to retain her place, due by September 30.

Sahar's Story
Sahar was born in Iran in 2003. Facing escalating religious persecution in 2013, her parents made the tough decision to flee Iran and seek asylum and a better life for Sahar, then nine, and her younger sister.

The family set their sights on Australia and began the long and at times dangerous journey. Unfortunately, their boat was blocked from entering Australia, and they were sent to Nauru, where they spent the next six years in offshore detention.

Like every refugee who has lived or still lives on Nauru, Manus Island or Christmas Island, years of detention took a heavy toll on Sahar. In 2018, her mental and physical health reached crisis point and the whole family was transferred to Australia where they have remained ever since.

Sahar lost six years of education, is not a native English speaker and lives with the enduring trauma of her time in detention. Despite these challenges, she has worked tirelessly to not just catch up at school but to excel. She has dreamed of practising law since she left Iran and her focus and dedication mean that this is now a very real possibility.

In Sahar's Words
"I want to study law because being a refugee and living in offshore detention showed me the cruel and unjust things asylum seekers go through. I want to have the power to help those who can’t help themselves and be a voice for the voiceless. I personally believe that each individual in the world has a purpose and mine would be to help people that are going to be in the same situation as I was."

We Need You
Please help Sahar go to uni.

If the target of $15,400 is reached, we can pay the deposit required to secure her place in the course. Any additional money will go towards her tuition, educational needs and living expenses while she studies. In the event of any amount raised beyond the full tuition needed by Sahar for her degree, funds will go towards other children affected by offshore detention.

Thank you for helping this bright, determined young woman live her dream. I truly believe she will improve the world.
