Help Rory Smith

Rory Smith suffered a gunshot to the back of his head from his adopted son who is 16 years old. This was no accident and should have never happened.

Rory was working at his desk, researching some parts for a piece of equipment he was currently working on. He was sitting with his back to the rest of his office when he was shot in the back of the head by his adopted son without warning. Because of his behavioral issues, the son had been withdrawn from school and was supposed to be working on his home-school work.

Rory supports his family by working as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic in his own shop, Southern Heavy. He is a great husband to Ludi, his wife, and a wonderful loving father to both of his adopted children.

He was flown by Memorial Hermann Life Flight to Memorial Hermann hospital and underwent surgery for the gunshot wound. Rory spent 3 weeks in Neuro-ICU and another 10 days in a regular room where he was supported and cared for by, in our opinion, the best group of doctors, nurses and support staff anyone could ask for.

Rory is now at a rehabilitation hospital where he is learning to use his arms and legs again and is getting stronger every day. He will soon have to undergo another surgery at Memorial Herman to put a permanent titanium plate in the place where parts of his damaged skull were removed due to the gunshot wound.

Due to Rory's self-employment, he did not have medical insurance at the time of the shooting and as the cost continues to grow so does the immediate and long term financial impact this is having on his family.

This is a burden he should not be concerned with. He should only resolve himself to getting stronger and more cognitative in his thinking, so that he may go back to doing the things he enjoys and providing for his family as soon as possible.
