Roo is a 22 month old Belgian Malinois and Lisa is his person. They are both friends of mine. Lisa I know through Facebook and our many shared interests/groups/friends and Roo I've known since he was a wee puppy about 10 weeks old, rescued from a neglectful situation and was in foster care by another friend/colleague. When Lisa had to say goodbye to her last Malinois, under very stressful conditions, I realized that she really needed a new buddy and since Roo really needed a person to call his own, I arranged for the two to meet.
It was love at first sight.
On Tuesday, September 25th, Roo went for his distemper/parvo booster and very soon after became lethargic, began vomiting and just quickly deteriorated overall. At first the vet thought perhaps it was a vaccine reaction, but now the doctor believes this may be related to a mystery condition which caused 1/3 of Roo's stomach to become necrotic in May. He had surgery back then to remove the dead tissue and no final diagnosis was made, but Roo, true to his name, bounced back and all has been well until now.
So far, today, Roo has had an ultrasound, two x-rays, a test for pancreatic disorders, blood work, several medications, continuous IV fluids, and a hospital stay. The current plan is to stabilize Roo with fluids and support while continuing to do tests to get to the root of his problem once and for all. Lisa's goal is to take Roo to a critical specialist at the closest university hospital, which I believe is 8 hours away.
I asked Lisa, who has CFS and severe anxiety and depression, if she could help me tell of of you a little bit about her and Roo and their beautiful relationship. This is what she said:
"Roo is my everything. He's truly the best dog I've ever had. A couple of weeks after I got him, he lied across my chest during night terrors. He gets me up and out and moving, no matter how I feel. I love doing obedience with him, but he's the most perfect companion even when we're doing nothing.
When I'm not feeling well, he'll lie down with me for as long as I need to. When I am better, he knows and he gets me out on the field playing ball.I cannot imagine my life without him. He is always there for me
Roo's registered name is Heart and Soul, because he really is."
So, if you would like to help Lisa continue to do her best to help her best friend get healthy again, please consider donating even just a little bit to help Roo get his bounce back. I know that Lisa, Roo, and I would be very grateful.
