Hello everyone,
I’m Rodcely Muro and I'm an international student from Venezuela at Iowa State University (ISU), junior in architecture. I came to the United States with the dream of obtaining my architecture degree and seeking a better life since my country is going through a humanitarian crisis due to the government in the last 18 years.
When I came to the US, my parents had their own businesses which provided the economic means to afford my university. My mom had a store and my dad a company that would sold electrical equipment to construction sites or companies. However, in less than a year, they both lost their businesses. The money we had saved for my tuition was just enough for my dad to feed my mom and my little sister. As a result, they moved to the Dominican Republic in the hopes to find a job since the economy in Venezuela collapsed. My dad was hoping he could restart his company but, sadly, nothing went the way he though. Today, my dad, mom and sister are living in a small studio apartment and sleeping on the floor because they don't have the money to buy a bed. They are working at least 9 hours a day every day of the week. Despite this, What they earn is just enough to feed themselves. Specially with the health issues they have both been having recently. Meanwhile, I stayed in the US to work and study so I wouldn't lose my visa and be able to send them some money, so that they could rent a place to stay. I do my best to keep making payments to ISU, but it is not enough and my debt goes up to $20,000 now. If I quit college, I would lose my visa and won't be able to get it back because of the political situation of my home country. In addition, I don't even have a place to go back to because my parents sold everything we had in Venezuela.
I need at least $10,000 in order to register for next semester and not lose my visa. My family and I, have done all we possibly could, but we need help.
