Richie's Fight Against Brain Cancer

My father, Richard Kelly, 60 years old, of Bricktown, New Jersey has recently been diagnosed with brain cancer. As a result, he is unable to work. The cancer has affected his ability to think clearly and he has short-term memory loss. The journey started September 9th of last
year when my dad was involved in an auto accident. The accident caused him to be seen at Ocean Medical Center's ER. During his visit,a chest CT scan miraculously showed a spot on his right lung. The
spot was later on diagnosed as cancerous. We decided to go Memorial Sloan Kettering, where dad had the middle lobe of his right lung removed on November 23rd. The surgery went well and dad was able to return to work within a week after his surgery (he wanted to go
back as soon as he could). Time passed, and doctors were pleasedwith the results they saw on his 6-month post-operative appointment.His chest CT scan showed that his lungs were clear. We were sohappy that the cancer was gone and believed that other than his
periodic follow-up visits; he had won his fight against this terribledisease. However, on June 16 th only one week had past since my dad’s post-op visit my dad started to show signs of confusion and a slight facial droop. Once again, he was rushed to Ocean Medical
Center's ER. He had a CT scan and MRI of the head, which showed 3 tumors in his brain, all in different locations. Our family was devastated, the cancer had returned.
The doctor’s decided to remove the largest tumor located in his frontal lobe, and then treat the remaining tumors with radiation. The tumor located in his frontal lobe was the cause of dad’s confusion and decreased cognitive function. One week later, on June 22nd my dad had brain surgery at Jersey Shore Medical Center to remove the largest of the tumors. His surgery went well, but he still is suffering from slight confusion, expressive aphasia, and cognitive decline. My dad’s fight with cancer has begun once again. It will continue in a
couple of weeks with radiation of the remaining tumors. However, this time the cancer has left dad disabled, unable work and with memory loss.
Dad has always been very conscientious and always gives his all with everything he does; he is an exceptional husband, loving father and especially a hard worker. He has been the main provider for our family up until his recent diagnosis. Since his diagnosis doctors have taken
away his driving privileges and deemed him as psychologically unfit to go back to work. He suffers from confusion and cannot function safely or properly at his job; he is a construction worker and operates heavy
machinery. Currently, my mother works as a teacher's assistant with special needs students. My younger sister works part time bussingtables at a local restaurant. I am a full time nursing student and am finishing up my last year of schooling at Ocean County College. I currently work at Ocean Medical Center as a nurse’s aide. My mom's income combined with mine is not nearly enough to pay for our bills and food while my dad is unable to work. As a result, we are in danger of loosing our house and all that he has worked so hard to provide for us.
