Dear All,
People that know me know that I haven’t lived in the UK for many years now and the place I call home is Dubai.
This year has been my worst year of my life so far and I have had times where I thought I could not get through it.
People that know me, know that I am so positive, happy and always look for the good in people but I will be honest with you I will never understand why this happened to my dad as he is the kindest man I know.
The day of the accident broke me and it’s a day I will never forget for the rest of my life, I have the most amazing relationship with my dad as most of you will know and that’s why I feel this pain but when I see my dad and the determination he has with the fight in eyes, he is the one that is in pain he is the one that can’t climb the stairs to bed at night, go and have game of racquetball with his friends, drive his car, go to work do the daily things that we do every day without thinking.
My dad is the miracle dad and I will do everything in my power to help and support him as much as possible and I don’t break my promises and I promised him he will walk again and he will so long as he gets the treatment and rehabilitation that he needs to overcome this injury.
I made a promise to my dad that he will walk again and I will do everything in my power to help him but I can’t do that without your help and support.
On the 29th January this year my whole world changed forever,
I received a phone call to tell me my dad has been in a very bad accident and had been rushed to hospital and was taken into intensive care. My dad had fallen through a garage roof and hit is head on a boiler on the way down and landed on his back.
My whole world came crashing down around me and I needed to get home as soon as possible, I remember this day like it was yesterday it’s a day I will never forget.
I had to find the courage to get on a flight home not knowing if he was going to make it or not, thankfully I have an amazing boyfriend and friends who were there to help and support me and get me on that flight not knowing what is happening or awaits me when I land.
When I arrived in the UK my dad was alive but still in ICU, I was informed by the doctors that his injuries were so severe that if he does wake up he may never be the same again due to his brain injury he suffered in the fall and there was a possibility he may never know who we as family and he will never walk again.
Anyone who is reading this and knows my dad, his life is all about his work which is a roofer and playing racquetball.
The doctors informed us that they would not operate on his back due to his age, my dad is fitter than most 30-year old's so is all we could do was pray at this time.
After a few days of being in ICU they tried to wake him to tell him he will never walk again at this point my brother intervened and told the doctors to do no such thing he has serious head injuries and if you tell him this now he will not fight to stay alive.
The doctors decided to carry out some more tests with his legs to see if there was any sensation, then they would proceed with the back / spine operation. The doctors were shocked when carrying out there examination to see how quickly the swelling had gone down on his back which was obviously down to how fit he was and how quickly his body was responding to treatment.
Thank god that day he had minor sensation in both legs so they decided to operate but also said due to the injuries being so severe he will still never walk again.
I told the doctors you don’t know my dad, he is the miracle dad and he will fight harder than anyone to walk again just wait and see.
My dad continued to stay in ICU as they had to monitor the head injuries as the swelling had still not gone down. After 3 weeks of being in ICU he was moved to a normal ward for recovery but his memory took a while to come back due to the amnesia but fortunately he remembers everything as of today.
Due to the damage on the spine he was placed in a neck brace and forced to lie flat on his back for 6 weeks to allow the back injury to fuse together. He was eventually moved to a specialist spinal rehabilitation centre in Oswestry where we were informed that the centre was the best equipped in the UK for dealing with spinal injuries and had the best chance to help him walk again.
My dad has sensation in his legs but no feelings in his feet so we thought they had something to work with and give him some hope to try and walk again. After a couple of weeks in the rehabilitation centre we soon came to realise that they were more interested in teaching him how to use a wheelchair rather than helping him to walk again.
Every day in the rehabilitation centre my dad tried to push himself without the support of the physiotherapists as is all my dad wants to do is walk again and cannot live with the idea of staying in a wheelchair for the rest of his life.
We had many meetings with the doctors at Oswestry with regards to how they took away hope from my dad and that they had no right to do that. We asked for advice on what are the best alternative options in the world to take him to but we didn’t receive any support that we needed. It felt like we were banging our head against a brick wall continuously and throughout it all my dad remained positive, he had his up and down days but generally he stayed strong and didn’t let the negativity get to him.
After months of research and with the expertise and advice of specialist injury doctors, we have found many specialist facilities around the world that haven proven that you don’t have accept what the general practioners say there is now hope for my dad and many miracle stories of people with the same mechanism of injury and have shocked their own doctors and then have once again learnt to walk unaided.
I am writing this to you because I need your help and support we as family want to send my dad for stem cell treatment which has been recommended by specialist injury doctors as the best treatment and only chance to help my dad walk again.
The treatment consists of a cellular treatment using bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, administered either intravenously or intrathecally. This is a lengthy and complicated procedure which, unfortunately, is only offered in Germany or the USA. Although cell-based therapies such as these have grown rapidly in the last few years (already showing great results of functional recovery), it is yet to be rolled out worldwide.
This has been proven to work and has helped many people around the world to date but due to some of the testing still ongoing it is only available to private patients hence the price tag it is for the surgery.
