Can you imagine receiving a letter from your landlord forcing you to leave your home? With no upfront explanation or plausible reason?
A few weeks ago that's exactly what happened to my dear friend Rich, along with multiple other long-term tenants in his building. He was served with an eviction notice from his apartment in North Hollywood, CA and given 60 days to vacate.
This news came as a complete shock as he has been a tenant in his apartment building for 12 years; paying rent regularly and on time. He loves his home and had no intention of leaving.
Apparently, under a California law called The Ellis Act, landlords are able to evict tenants in order to tear down or renovate their units and subsequently raise the rent drastically. This devastating occurrence happens ALL the time and is becoming more and more prevalent in Los Angeles neighborhoods, where rent is already sky high.
Rich has become a hard working, rent-paying victim of the Los Angeles renting crisis.
He must evacuate his home by February 1st, 2018. This gives him under two months to pack his belongings, seek assistance with the move, and be able to find an affordable, wheel chair accessible living space.
We are launching this campaign in hopes to bring light to this unjust, disruptive epidemic that is taking over cities across Los Angeles county and beyond.
Please share Rich's story and donate if you can. Asking for financial help is a secondary goal to finding a new home. Accessible single units are much harder to come by so that is the main challenge at hand.
