<div>On September 26, 1998, our family’s world changed forever. My uncle, Tío Carlos Hernández-McDowell, was kidnapped in Los Amates, Guatemala. For three heartbreaking days, our family searched for him with hope and fear. On September 30, 1998, we received the devastating news he had been found, and that same day, we laid him to rest. During the funeral, our family was threatened again warned that my other uncles would be next.

<div>From such a young age, my mom and uncles were forced to separate from each other and leave their parents, their home, and everything they knew to survive. My mom eventually found safety in the United States, and together with my father, worked tirelessly to bring my uncle Estuardo Hernandez here in 2003.

<div>For the past 23 years, my uncle has lived in the U.S., working hard, staying out of trouble, and building a life surrounded by the only family he has us. He’s been more than an uncle he’s been a second father, a provider, a mentor, and the heart of our home.

<div>For all these years, we never asked for help. Out of fear, fear that our family might be separated, fear that speaking up could bring back the pain we once lived through. But now, that fear has become our reality. On September 30, 2025, exactly 27 years after the day we buried our other uncle, Estuardo was detained by ICE, approximately at 6:30am in Washington D.C on his way to work.

<div>This has deeply impacted our entire family. We’re so used to hearing his laughter, his jokes, his voice filling our home. Now, there’s only silence. His room remains untouched, waiting for him to come back.

<div>We’re doing everything we can to bring him home, but we can’t do it alone. This isn’t just about the money your prayers, shares, and kind words mean just as much.

<div>El 26 de septiembre de 1998, la vida de nuestra familia cambió para siempre. Mi tío, Tío Carlos Hernández-McDowell, fue secuestrado en Los Amates, Guatemala. Durante tres días llenos de angustia, mi familia lo buscó con esperanza y miedo. El 30 de septiembre de 1998, recibimos la devastadora noticia lo encontraron, y ese mismo día tuvimos que despedirnos de él en su funeral. Durante la ceremonia, nuestra familia fue amenazada nuevamente: les advirtieron a mi mamá y a mis otros tíos que ellos serían los siguientes.

<div>Desde muy jóvenes, mi mamá y mis tíos tuvieron que separarse, dejar a sus padres, su hogar y todo lo que conocían para poder sobrevivir. Mi mamá logró encontrar seguridad en Estados Unidos, y junto a mi papá trabajaron incansablemente para poder traer a mi tío Estuardo Hernandez en el año 2003.

<div>Durante estos 23 años, mi tío ha vivido en este país trabajando duro, sin ningún problema con la ley, y formando una vida rodeado de la única familia que tiene: nosotros. Ha sido mucho más que un tío ha sido un segundo padre, un apoyo, un ejemplo, y una fuente constante de amor y alegría. Siempre ha estado ahí para nosotros, tanto emocional como económicamente.

<div>Por 23 años, no hicimos nada por miedo. Miedo a que nuestra familia se separara, miedo a revivir el dolor del pasado. Pero ahora, ese temor se ha vuelto realidad. El 30 de septiembre de 2025, exactamente 27 años después del día en que despedimos a nuestro otro tío, Estuardo fue detenido por ICE aproximadamente alas 6:30am en North Capitol Washington D.C en camino para su su trabajo. El dolor y el miedo de aquel entonces han regresado, y nuestro hogar ya no es el mismo.

<div>Esto nos ha impactado profundamente. Estamos acostumbrados a escucharlo reír, hacer sus bromas, llenar la casa con su voz. Ahora solo hay silencio. Su cuarto sigue intacto, esperándolo, con la esperanza de que pronto regrese.

<div>Los fondos recaudados serán destinados a gastos legales y cualquier otro costo necesario para poder traerlo de regreso a casa.

<div>Estamos haciendo todo lo posible por tenerlo de vuelta, pero no podemos hacerlo solos. No se trata solo del dinero también las oraciones, los buenos deseos y el apoyo significan muchísimo para nuestra familia. Como dice el dicho, “hoy por mí, mañana por ti.”
