Help Protect Jinja Island From Climate Change

+++ UPDATE +++

First of all, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who donated to help get Jinja Island back on its feet.

Thanks to you, the house is back up and running, the electrics and water are working and we have a toilet, a shower, doors, windows and a kitchen sink again… over the next few months people can come and stay on Jinja Island in relative comfort. This will mean a steady income for Ismael and his family who are living on the island.

However, protecting the island from the effects of global warming is an ongoing effort.

When I lived on the island from 2014-2017 we would get very high tides (+0.5m) maybe once a year, usually in December. Since I’ve been back in 2021, we’ve had a very high tide once a month, with another due at the start of November.

Obviously this is not something that’s sustainable in the long term. Half the island gets flooded, and it’s salt water. We have lost trees, plants and grass. When I lived here I grew bananas and pineapples on the island, now that’s simply not possible.

So how do we defend against the rising sea? Well, there’s a few things we can do right now that would help.

Firstly, Ismael needs a working boat, with that we can bring soil from his family farm just a short distance away.

Secondly, we need to build a raised walkway from the boat dock to the house. It’ll be 100m long and consist of over 400 individual pieces of wood.

Finally, we need to build a low wall (just a foot high) around the windward side of the island.

In order to achieve this, we need your help.

In return for any donations of £50 or more from now on, your name (or pseudonym) will be etched into a tread of the walkway.

Please give what you can. Thanks to you, we’ve got Jinja Island back on its feet. Now let’s make it fly!

I'm returning to Jinja Island, the jungle hideaway I won in a gameshow, and the place I had to abandon several years ago after my dad in the UK was diagnosed with vascular dementia.

I'll have just six weeks to restore the island to its former glory, or at the very least make the house habitable and fix the boat, so that visitors can come stay again (yes that potentially means YOU!).

I won't be alone on this quest. I'm taking Marcus Kett aka ALL SHORTS, who is a professional carpenter, builder, electrician and boat builder. He's also as mad as a box of frogs.

We'll be using what we can salvage on the island and around the archipelago to fix the place up, but obviously there are some things (like new solar panels, a new motor for the boat etc.) that we're unlikely to find just find lying about!

If you'd like to help us to achieve the dream of breathing new life into Jinja Island, please support us in any way you can: we'll be livestreaming our misadventures for your edification on YouTube , Twitter , Twitch and Facebook.
