Help Restore Historic Asbury Church
Donation protected
As we celebrated Asbury United Methodist Church (known to all as Asbury) anniversary earlier this year in May, a main beam supporting the sanctuary floor failed, forcing all to evacuate the building immediately. We have not been able to use the church for worship or community events since then. But Brownsburg, Virginia – being the special community that it is – has co me together to help us make the necessary repairs and restoration.
Progress has been excellent. With the assistance of many volunteers, they have identified the structural issues, completed demolition in the basement of the church, obtained the necessary permits, replaced the basement windows, and located generous contractors who will perform the work at substantially reduced costs.
Historic Lexington Foundation (HLF) has awarded Asbury a grant of $21,000 to help us get started with the repairs. These funds will soon be expended, and we have begun a campaign entitled “Standing Strong: Brownsburg’s Historic Asbury Church” in an effort to match the HLF grant.
Please help us continue the project! Asbury has been an important part of Brownsburg, Virginia for many years. Asbury United Methodist Church traces its history to 1889 when the Black members of New Providence Presbyterian Church decided to organize their own church and purchased a one-half acre lot. While the original church was destroyed by fire, the cornerstone for this building was laid in May 1917. We hope you will recognize its value to the community with a contribution to the “Standing Strong” project.
Your donations are being managed closely by Asbury's trustees are 100% are going to ensure Asbury will remain a vibrant part of Brownsburg for years to come. Ernest Rife (known to all as JR,) Bill, and I are honored to help in being able to offer this site for others to show their support as well.
JR is taking these funds as they are being contributed and paying the contractors who you can see are making great progress.
Thank you for your consideration and your generosity.
