I am currently in Malawi for an academic internship, and what I’ve witnessed in the community of Vongo, Northern Region is heartbreaking.
For more than 10 years, the village has lived without a functioning borehole. Something so simple like turning on a tap or filling a cup with clean water is a basic human right, yet here it is out of reach.
Without the borehole, families depend on the local river- used daily as a bathroom, laundry site, bathing place, and water source all at once.
This lack of clean water means:
•Students miss class to fetch drinking water during the school day
• Teachers request relocation because there is no accessible clean water for themselves or their families
• Girls on their period must bathe in the river, then drink from it afterward
• Waterborne diseases like cholera and typhoid remain a constant threat
The Opportunity
By repairing the borehole, we can restore clean and safe water to Vongo.
Borehole water is 80% cleaner than the river, and access to it will:
• Keep students in school, learning without the burden of water collection
• Encourage teachers to remain, strengthening the local education system
• Provide safe water every day for drinking, cooking, bathing, and laundry
• Support hygiene and sanitation campaigns for long-term health
• Empower the community to maintain the borehole and plan for future repairs
This repair will be done with the support of a Malawian registered NGO Rural Development Partners.
Once the borehole is repaired, our team will be working hand-in-hand with the community to keep it running for the long term. We’ll also launch fun and practical hygiene and sanitation campaigns to protect everyone’s health. We will assist the community to form a small committee to look after future repairs, with simple ways to raise funds — like small household contributions or planting guava trees that can be sold to support maintenance. This way, your gift doesn’t just fix the borehole today but it helps the community keep clean water flowing for years to come.
