Help restore classrooms and toilets in Tanzania

My name is Yannis, I come from Greece and I am currently located at Arusha, Tanzania, where I have been volunteering for The White Rose , a local NGO which is mostly focused on improving education quality in public and private primary schools.



I have decided to volunteer at a public primary school at Ilkidinga (about 15km far from Arusha city centre), where the issues that students and teachers face are more severe than the ones in a private school. The toilets are in a really bad condition putting the children's health in danger, the school has no fence so villagers use the student's toilets, the floors and the walls in the classrooms are pretty damaged. However, the most critical issue at the moment are the roofs in the classrooms.

There are at least 5 classrooms that need to have their roofs restored and a ceiling board added below them. Some of these roofs are in a really bad condition and on the first heavy rain they might fall on the children's heads, so they need to be totally restored. Others just need to be fixed, as they have holes through which the rain drips in. However, all of them lack a ceiling board which definitely needs to be added as a safety net, since several wooden bars have already been broken and are about to fall on the children's heads.

The total cost to completely restore 1 classroom roof and add the ceiling board is at 930 euros (about 2.500.000 Tanzanian shillings). Since we are aiming to restore the roof of at least 5 classrooms, we are hoping to gather the total amount of 5.000 euros. Ideally, we should gather these funds by October 30, 2021, so that the renovation works can start as soon as possible.

 

The government cannot provide sufficient funds for every public school in Tanzania, so the majority of these schools basically depend on personal initiatives to gather money and address any critical issues they face.
