Three South Orange and Maplewood (SOMA) synagogues, Congregation Beth El , Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel and Oheb Shalom Congregation, have joined together to resettle refugee families. Thanks to the generosity of our community, and our partnership with Church World Service (CWS), The SOMA Refugee Resettlement Project has already resettled a Syrian family in Maplewood and an Iraqi family in Haledon.
We are now working with International Rescue Committee (IRC) to sponsor a third family in our area. They are scheduled to arrive shortly and we are once again in need of funds!
The Torah teaches us to welcome the stranger for we were once strangers in the land of Egypt. The commandment to welcome the stranger is mentioned more often than any other commandment in the entire Torah. Ours is a history of wandering and we have often been refugees seeking a safe haven from persecution. Now it is our turn to fulfill our obligation to welcome the stranger.
We are grateful that we have already raised funds to help resettle two families. We hope you will continue to support these efforts as we prepare to welcome the third!
